So my friend posted on facebook, a question.
He asked why we needed to learn things if we die anyways.
I answered, "So that when we die, we die knowing things that will get us remembered instead of dying not knowing a thing, easily being forgotten.
One of his dumb friends (a girl) replied that we all die. Why would you be happy about college?
I simply replied, "Why would I be happy I went to college? Imagine this. You live in a home your whole life, refusing to learn anything. You try to live your life the best you can, but you never leave, never meeting new people nor being able to answer your own questions. Why is the sky blue? Why do I cry when I'm sad? How do magnets work? All of this is learned and absorbed by our minds wether we like it or not. I haven't been to college yet, but when I become a famous engineer and invent something people for generations will use, I'll sit back and smile at my life while the ones who refused to learn, still try to figure out why the sky is blue."
Partially true, but not totally true. First, it's pretty much impossible to not learn. Even if you never went to college, you'd probably learn things. If you sat in your basement, but had access to television or a computer or books, you'd learn things. Human brains tend to learn no matter what. To your friends original questions, it's not a matter of why you have to learn things, because you will anyway, it's a matter of what you have to learn. And frankly, most people are going to forget everything they learned in high school anyway. (Actually, you tend to remember about one thing per year that you learned in high school, unless it's your career.)
Second, there are many ways to leave a legacy outside of going to college, and very few people who go to college will leave a legacy. Actually, the most certain way of leaving a legacy is also the one that requires the least education: Have children. But then, it's impossible to have children without learning something from raising them.
550733 Why must you be so literal? This is me arguing with a bunch of naive and immature teenagers! I agree with all your points but damn, it doesn't sound half as awesome when you do that!
Hmph, teenagers. But very true, Magic.
I believe that if any human from this dimension enters the pony world, unless they focus on something upon passing through the fabric of space time, they will automatically become an alicorn. Done. So if you enter Equestria, yay you have probably 10,000 more years to live.
550733 A study shows that during high school students learn little or nothing. Also, the damn school banned youtube so I can't watch pony!
Edit: Royce, you really need to be more sensitive about what you say. Don't go calling your friend's friends dumb, then state that it's a girl. Highly offensive to some people, but you're off the hook for now. Sorry for the nag.
562093 Nah she's dumb. She doesn't even know me and tried to tell me I was stupid. I have a right to call her dumb.
