Art Showcase: Biollante redesign · 7:54pm Nov 8th, 2020

Biollante is a kaiju from the 1989 film Godzilla vs. Biollante. Created by Doctor Genshiro Shirigami, Biollante was conceived when the doctor's daughter Erika was killed during a terrorist attack on his laboratory while he was studying Godzilla cells. Grief-stricken, he spliced Erika's DNA with that of a rose and threw in bits of Godzilla's genome for good measure, hoping to create an immortal plant species that would carry on his daughter's memory in some way. What he got instead was Biollante, a 120-foot amalgamation of Godzilla, rose, and human, armed with biting flytrap tendrils, piercing vines, and corrosive sap. Biollante fought Godzilla twice before she eventually transformed into glowing spores and ascending into space, the remains of Erika's spirit within bidding her father one last farewell before she left.

I don't quite know what inspired me to draw this. Maybe it's because I was actually watching vs. Biollante the other day, or because I've been getting into Little Shop of Horrors lately and Audrey II kinda looks like a more cartoony version of Biollante. Or both.

Anyway, here's my take on Biollante.

Those actually aren't eyes on her head. They're eyespots. My version of Biollante doesn't have conventional eyes like her final form in the movie does. The thorny tongue and extra root-like tendrils were other additions I made.

Biollante is very significant to the plot of NES Godzilla Creepypasta. She's also an awesome Kaiju.

You have good taste.

Biollante was a kaiju that always freaked me out a fair bit. All those teeth... then I found out that her design came in part from a dentist, and it suddenly made SO much sense to me. Also, I think I once had a nightmare about her when I was younger.

Not a bad job with this design, I must say!

Some of the concept designs were even freakier looking.

I don't doubt that for a moment.

There were quite a few who's early designs were really weird. Orga's design went all over the place before the settled on the one we finally see in the movie.

I checked, and yes, they really went for a lot of various designs before settling on the one we actually got... though I can't help but feel a wee bit like some of those designs would have been really, really cool to see on the big screen.

One of the coolest kaiju to ever exist.
