Fic Recommendations - 31/08/20 · 12:52am Aug 31st, 2020
Ayyyyyy lmao
Okay, so like, I am working on Local. The next chapter is a big departure from all the previous ones in terms of format so it's been slow going, but it's coming along. We're in the home stretch, I'm so excited (and terrified) to show you where it's all been leading up to.
So anyway, did I hear people asking for me to recommend them fics? No? Tough, here we go anyway.
My main man Zontan doesn't need any help getting attention, dude's a feature machine. But, every once in a while one floats under the radar when it really shouldn't. Silk is a study in expectation subversion and deftly executed character work. It's also horrifying, even to someone like me who genuinely really likes spiders and isn't scared of them. And it's horrifying because it knows how to play it's audience and it does like a goddamn fiddle. Go and read it.
Is it for me to call a vote ratio objectively wrong? Potentially. Potentially not. I'm still gonna do it with this one. I have no idea where the downvotes came from, but Ruby is one of the most fiercely dedicated authors I know, and she smashed it with this one. If you want an achingly beautiful, stunningly intelligent and ingeniously subtle story then look no further. This story never holds your hand, it never spoonfeeds you the information, it treats its audience with too much respect for that. And, if you're willing to dive into the excellent prose and plot, then you'll find this spellbinding story does exactly as much as it needs to. And that's not something every author can do.
Red is one of the best authors I've ever come across, and what he does in this story is nothing short of miraculous. My man outright blended a series of fic references into a drifting, dreamlike opus that feels truly, genuinely massive. This story comes from a beautiful place, and it touched me beyond description. And that's not just because of the fact that he very kindly dedicated it to myself and some of the other mods in the Quills and Sofas Group. It touched me because Red writes stories that weep. They feel grand and timeless in a really singular way. You're quite simply not getting the full experience of fimfic if you're not following Red (or any of the authors references here honestly).
If you follow me, then chances are you're already well acquainted with Flash. Man's a straight-up fimfic legend (and just a seriously sound dude) when it comes to horror, and this story is a perfect example as to why. The sheer sense of pervasive, overwhelming dread he creates is something that should make anyone stand up and take notice. This story is not an experiment, this story isn't someone's reach for new horizons. No, this story is someone flexing their muscles. This story is a horror master sitting us down and saying 'look, this is why I'm known for this'. The ending of this piece has stuck with me since the very first time I've read it, it's a stroke of genius, in an already genius piece of horror. You owe it to yourself to read this one.
There's always a difficulty in claiming absolutes, but in this case, I can very confidently do so. Moontonite writes the most beautiful pieces of writing I've ever read. I want to reiterate that to make sure the appropriate gravity is given. Moontonite writes the most beautiful pieces of writing I've ever read. This is it. It also helps that she's an unfailingly awesome person too! The sheer poetry of her prose is jaw dropping. I've told her in the past that her work is symphonic, and it's not a word I use lightly. She composes, not writes. Her prose sings, not reads. You won't be the same after reading Moon's work, god knows I wasn't. Heed the CW, and dive in.
Silent is one of the most versatile writers I know. They can turn their hand to most anything. I've not read anything from them yet which is less than exceptional. This is my favourite thing they've done (until maybe a recent unpublished speedwrite). The atmosphere of this piece is wonderful, the story is dark and twisting and will posses you for a long time after you finish this. This is a story about salt and rock and love and vengeance. It's a story that feels like an old sailor tale told over centuries. It's a truly magnificent piece of writing. As with Moon's, heed the CW, but this is another story you should dive into, and ruminate beneath its waves.
Last, but by no means least, the singular wishcometrue. I don't know any other writer who lives in the heads of her characters like Wish. But the way she brings them to life, the way she realises all their struggles and their flaws and all the deep parts of them is, quite frankly, humbling. We should all inspire to write stories with the empathy, with the care, with the sheer emotional intelligence that she does. Wish is one of my best friends, and there are few people more deserving of your time than her. Because, somewhere in her work is a story that will stay with you for a long time. So many of them are still with me now.
You too nice, Seer.
