I got questions regarding editors

Apparently, this website have editors who can edit the story to make it better but I got questions.

How do they edit another person’s story? Did they have abilities to edit another person’s story or what? I thought the author is the only person to have access to their stories? I’m still trying to figure out this process.

And I don’t want to came across as rude but when I find an editor, do I have to pay them or they’re willing to work for free? What if the editor is from far away from my place?

I am just curious about it.

Basically users are the editors they proof read your stories to check for mistakes for example I send my chapters to dramamaster829 for proofreading
