Take a minute to be kind to someone today, even if that someone is you. We all need a little more kindness, giving and receiving.

I played Dragonball Xenoverse · 4:44am May 5th, 2020

Okay, coming back from Shadow the Hedgehog.
Another fanfiction game, but this one was enjoyable for me.
So when you start the game, you've got Shenron telling you that you're being summoned, you make your OC and then are teleported to the planet of the Supreme Kai of Time. Turns out that you were summoned to be the hero they needed, despite having tons of powerful capable fighters, including having access to the Z Fighters.
Oh well, it's your fanfiction and you're the protagonist. Have fun being the awesome hero you want to be.
Each race has advantages and disadvantages, not to mention size plays into strength and speed too. It's a cool little thing to further customize your character. Oh, and Takahata101 (Nappa from Dragonball Z Abridged) does one of the voices for the guys. Shouting funny attack names too.
There's something going on in the time stream, things aren't happening the way that they should along the Dragonball Z story line and it's up to this team you've been drafted into to fix things. And by fix things I mean hit them. It's a fighting game and Dragonball, hitting was going to be a major factor in this no matter how you cut it.
I try to keep from spoiling too much of a story so let me just finish with there's actually someone responsible, and you're going to stop them with the help of not only the other members of your team, but also the Z Fighters. I don't know why I was so excited in those last fights, but it had been built up well and I was really into it.
And there's side missions that get unlocked along the way that let you take on different sides of the fight and play around in different "what if" scenarios. And the difficulty is on a good slope, it feels easy at first but as you keep going you've got to work harder to win. Though there was an odd mission here and there that I had an easier time on the next one that was arguably more difficult.
These missions are open to online multiplayer, so link up with your friends online and tag team the enemies, or make new friends through the power of muscles.
So for controls, they take a bit of getting used to but once you do it is satisfying. Not to mention flying and speeding around the map is incredibly fun. Locking on was simple and quite necessary, it did fail me a few times, but overall it worked well. Special moves are simple and changed out in the “lobby” definitely play around and see what works best for you as each move has it's benefits. I tend to play close range so I have lots of charging special moves, but I keep a Kamehameha ready just so I can back off if I need to.
Transformations are balanced to keep some challenge in the game, though I do go Super as soon as I can and wreck up the place.
The stages are well done and destructible (which can be both fun and satisfying) though they do tend to feel repetitive after a while. They're based on scenes from the show and translate to 3D quite well. Switching stages during the mission was nice, and hunting down your opponent could be fun. There's a ton of things to collect: costumes, moves, abilities, transformations, Dragon Balls.
One thing I would call a drawback is that you really only go through the story once. I made other characters and it was just like switching out midstream. You can play earlier missions complete with cut scenes in the vault, but it's not the same.
The character interactions are good, the cut scenes with Trunks and the Kai of Time are entertaining and at times just as fun as the game itself. I did, however, find myself wanting a full on DBZA version of this game (Seriously, I would pay good money for that as DLC, especially if Dumplin were to be one of the trainers.) But that's just me being delusional.
For me, this was a welcome change from the last review. And a game I would highly recommend, along with it's sequel which, despite being similar, has got a few fun surprises.
