Happy Misgiving! · 11:21am Dec 25th, 2019

As some of y’all know, one of the guys I work with on the weekend conflates Thanksgiving and Christmas into a single holiday named “Misgiving.”

Source

And maybe it’s not exactly in the spirit of the holiday, but then odds are I’m going to be posting this at around 6am on Christmas Day, ‘cause I’ll be working a morning shift at a group home for Christmas.

Now, I know there’s a lot of blog posts where I gripe about work, but this isn’t one of them. Since we can’t exactly close adult foster care homes for holidays, being available for work on either Thanksgiving or Christmas is mandatory, and for years we’ve been planning accordingly, figuring out when everybody can get together and we have a big celebration then, and I had a fantastic Thanksgiving with my parents, brother, sister-in-law, and new niece.

Okay, it wasn’t quite like that; she’s still very smol, but I imagine in a couple of years . . .

Anyway to all of my readers, may you have a very merry Christmas, or whatever holiday you happen to observe this December!

... I wish you to have no bad surprises at this type of work (I bet some ...surprises will happen, just I hope they will be within.. expectations)..

Happy Hearths Warming, Biscuit!

Happy Appropriate Holiday(s) to you too. :)

Merry whatever... as long as you have a good time! :yay:

Merry Christmas, you filthy Admiral.

Misgivings?

IT'S A FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US!!!!!!!!

Those who have read Hogfather (Pratchett) know my feelings about Christmas
For the rest of you

Merry Christmas & Happy Hearth's Warming!

Merry Misgiving, Biscuit.

Hogfather had a pretty great view of Christmas though.
That we need to learn and internalize the little lies as children so that we can grow up to hold the big ones of friendship and society, justice and mercy as self-evident.

And a Happy Hearth's Warming to you too!

Happy Wintermas, Biscuit!

“And don't forget the presents," said the Chair of Indefinite Studies, as if reading off some internal list of gloom. "How...how full of potential they seem in all that paper, how pregnant with possibilities...and then you open them and basically the wrapping paper was more interesting and you have to say 'How thoughtful, that will come in handy.' It's not better to give than to receive, in my opinion, it's just less embarrassing.”
― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

“Ridcully sat in horrified amazement. He’d always enjoyed Hogswatch, every bit of it. He’d enjoyed seeing ancient relatives, he’d enjoyed the food, he’d been good at games like Chase My Neighbor up the Passage and Hooray Jolly Tinker. He was always the first to don a paper hat. He felt that paper hats lent a special festive air to the occasion. And he always very carefully read the messages on Hogswatch cards and found time for a few kind thoughts about the sender. Listening to his wizards was like watching someone kick apart a doll’s house.”
― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

“I GAVE THEM WHAT THEY WANTED IN THE STORE.

“Yeah, and that’s going to cause a lot of trouble, master. All them ‘toy pigs that really work. I didn’t say nothing ‘cos it was getting the job done but you can’t go on like that. What good’s a God who gives you everything you want?”

YOU HAVE ME THERE.

“It’s the hope that’s important. Big part of believe, hope. Give people jam today and they all just sit and eat it. Jam tomorrow, now – that’ll keep them going forever.”

AND YOU MEAN BECAUSE OF THIS THE POOR GET POOR THINGS AND THE RICH GET RICH THINGS?

“‘s right,” said Albert. “That’s the meaning of Hogswatch.”
― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

Thank you! Happy Boxing Day!

It went pretty well, and I had a nice, long phone conversation with my parents, which was nice.

Well, one guy was a real attention whore, another guy got so excited that he kangaroo-hopped through the house . . . all things considered, it was a pretty good day for everyone.

5174733
Thank you! Same to you!

5174760
Thanks, I did! Work went well, and I had a nice long phone conversation with my mom and dad.

Heh, nothing wrong with that!

I guess I’m lucky on most of that . . . don’t do a Christmas tree, lights are on the minivan, no in-laws, do half my shopping with Amazon reward points and the other half with my Christmas bonus.

Christmas music on the radio, though. . . .

That’s not a bad lesson, honestly.

Thanks!

One of these years (i.e., never), I’ll make me an Admiral Biscuit Hearth’s Warming Doll.

While I’m not as up on my Pratchett as I should be, I’ve always like this particular comic:

Merry Christmas Boxing Day! Technically, at least, but just under the wire still counts!

5175867
That comic has entirely the wrong angle on the scene, and is one of the bits that precedes one of Bob's quoted passages. It's about Death just... not understanding people and just giving them what they ask for.

5175858
Could be worse. Here, a LOT of it's in Spanish

Thanks! Just under the wire totally counts!

Well, that may be so, but honestly remembering the important lesson I learned as a little boy about playing with my dad’s razor . . .

There’s a similarly-themed comic with Link and the old man:

5175865 You could just use a rock :pinkiecrazy:

5176714
That’s a pretty logical explanation of why we need Christmas traditions (and other traditions, for that matter).

5176918
You’re right, I could. I have lots of rocks. Some of them are sharp and some are smooth; some of them are big and others are small.

5176086
Hmm, that would actually be an interesting change for me. There’s practically no songs in foreign languages here.
