I'm a princess! Are you a princess too?

So, there's a new alicorn coming, and we haven't (yet) gotten any explanation. The news came out today that Lauren Faust was very involved in creating the storyline with Princess Cadance, but did not plan for her to be an alicorn. My theory is that this was something handed down from the toy department. They are finally bowing to the many requests for white Celestia toys, but they've probably got fifty bazillion pink alicorn toys already stacked up in a warehouse somewhere. Now they can be packaged as Cadance toys! The toy stores will still have something pink to sell, which is what they demand. Everyone is happy?

Regarding show canon: I'm a little conflicted here. As I mentioned in my earlier blog post, I've never considered Celestia and Luna to be gods. I figure they were created magically, probably by the unicorn mages of old, for the specific purpose of uniting and ruling Equestria. If those mages could make two alicorns then presumably they could make three or more. So, the presence of a third doesn't really break my headcanon.

However... Cadance suffers from a bad case of "Who ordered this?" Why would they make a third?

Maybe Cadance is like a spare tire -- created in case something unfortunate happened to Celestia or Luna, and until then she just hangs around and looks pretty. But if that were so, wouldn't it have become Cadance's job to raise and lower the moon while Luna/NMM was hors de combat? Maybe it turned out that she wasn't up to the job, and is just an airhead whose special talent is hosting tea parties.

"I'm a princess! Are you a princess too?"

"My wings are so pretty!"

"I love it when you comb my hair!"

Not fit for moon duty.

I should write a fic about this!
