Just think about it, you and a couple of friends are watching classic South Park or something edgy. And then, some person comes who's not even a fan of it, demands changes (censorship) or outright turns off the program. Just why do people do this? Why do they ruin everyone's fun?
Seriously, they are. This is by far the most important issue, if they made their asses fatter it would improve viewership. If they made the ponies thicc prudes would complain, which would only draw in even more viewers. Twilight Sparkle, the protagonist of the series has a fat ass, and her teacher Princess Celestia, who's ass is even fatter.
The main reason is uncanny valley. When something looks human but not quite. A perfect example would be a robot trying to mimic being human, it looks unsettling. It's somewhat insulting towards the ponies, you have Twilight Sparkle there a beautiful unicorn and you can't embrace her just because she's not fully in human shape, even though she has all the qualifications to be a sapient-minded
I grew up in the 80's and hated them, but you're right, the movies were awesome. Batteries not included, Back to the Future, Die Hard, Return of the Jedi. There were some awful ones too though, like the original TMNT (which was 1990, but was full 80's style) or Masters of the Universe. Some of the movies were legendary, which is weird, because the art, cars, music, and style (which seems to be coming back for some unknown reason) were all terrible. Although, I did like the fact that every advertisement seemed to include some scantly clad woman or three. Perfect example being the Budweiser girls.
A whole bunch of things came together just right. Technology, politics, and recent history gave them a bunch of material to work with (you can have Soviets or Nazis for enemies, computers and rockets are new and cool, etc). Hollywood was pushing "tits and beer liberalism" over political correctness, so (as long as it passed the ratings board) anything goes. They'd worked out how to do sequels and remakes just right: do the parts people liked bigger and better, and drop the crappy parts. (Seriously, watch Alien and Aliens back to back, or Terminator and Terminator 2. They started over with the same movie, cut the slow bits, made the action bigger, and made the bad guys scarier.)
Because people didn’t care about every little thing making sense, no one tried to make political statements in the movies, and the idea of being politically correct hadn’t reached such an extreme yet.
You should check out the Screamer series it brings back memories of the 80's with flair

Robocop, the original Ghostbusters, and the Indiana Jones trilogy.

Cuz back then movies didn’t use just crappy CGI to make awesome scenes.
