    Update Tonight

    Hey everypony,

I'm back. And back writing too. I've finally found some energy and inclination to get back into writing, and have managed to hash out three more chapters of 'Crossing the Rubicon'. Expect sporadic updates, starting tonight.

    New Year, New Problems

    Hello everypony,

I hope you all had a great Christmas and decent start to the new year. I figured it made sense to update you on what's going on at the moment.

Well, my new year hasn't exactly got off on the best of starts. I'm going to be starting a new job next week, and it means that I'm finally going to move out and have my own place.

The Finale · 8:11pm Oct 12th, 2019

Well, there we have it, folks. It's been some journey, but we've finally come to the last episode. Well, the last three episodes. I thought I'd drop my two bits on how the finale of finales went. Spoilers, obviously follow. For once, Americans, I've seen the episode before you. :trollestia:

So, my overall impression was...to be honest...meh. :ajbemused:

It wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it wasn't brilliant either. It all just felt so...played out, I suppose. Villains rise, attack Canterlot, there's a moment of doubt, then the good guys rally and save the world. It's a tale almost as old as storytelling itself. Which is why I'm a bit disappointed. It just felt like we were going through the motions. And if you ask me, the finale episodes deserved better.

But then again, I suppose we are all going to judge harshly the final episode of the final season. When you have a story that is effectively open ended like FiM, it is quite tricky to tie everything off in a neat little bow, and to be fair, the show had been building to this big confrontation for some time. It just didn't suit my taste. That doesn't make it a bad episode though. After all, I hated 'A Canterlot Wedding', so what do I know, right?

Speaking of, I will say it was nice to see Celestia finally get her revenge on Chrysalis. Turning her to stone was just perfect if you're going to go down the 'impossible to reform route', which I must admit is a bit of a shame, I'd have liked to see her reform. In all honesty, I was expecting Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy to squabble and fight amongst themselves, or, if Grogar had been real, to have teamed up with the Mane Six in a sort of 'my enemy's enemy' situation. But anyway, since that didn't happen, it was the closest thing we got to the bad guy properly biting the dust. I certainly shan't be shedding any tears over Tirek or Cozy, the latter never really grew on me as a threatening villain in the same way her compatriots did, I must confess.

As for the story itself, like I said; just a tad too predictable. Then again, this is a twenty five year old analysing a show aimed at ten year olds. I just wished we got to see more Discord shenanigans as we did in the season opener. But as is often the case, you kind of need to write out the nigh omnipotent chaos god, otherwise the episode tends to end rather quickly. I just wished we got something other than princesses in danger, Canterlot under attack, bad guys cackling, rainbow and friendship, the end. I didn't mind though that Tia and Luna got a bit more of an active role this time though, and ultimately struck the death blow to our antagonists.

So, yeah, overall, I'd give it a solid C, maybe a C+. If it was earlier in the series, I might be more amazed, but after nine seasons, FiM does have a hard time pushing the boat out any further. And, as I've said, I can see why certain decisions were made. I'm certainly not going to be one of those people screaming about how it ruined the show.

On that note, I doubt any of them will read this, but if anyone involved in the show is reading this. Let me just say; thanks for nine wonderful years, and two days, of pony.

Now as to the epilogue, as it were. It was actually quite clever I thought. Again, not entirely my cup of tea; I'd honestly rather the future be left open to our imagination, but I still have nothing bad to say about it. I'm certainly glad we got to see everything tied off in a nice little bow, instead of just ending with the finale episodes. I for one always hated the void that came at the end of a season, with everything stopping dead until the next season, right after the villain was defeated. My only criticism is that we didn't get to see what became of Celestia and Luna at the end. We got to see Bon Bon and Lyra, why no sun horse and moon horse? I certainly loved the closing scene, that same book that we all saw in the very first episode. It gave the whole thing a nice bit of continuity; as if we'd finally come full circle.

I'm gonna take about a week to process, and let the fandom calm down a bit. And then I think I'll post another blog reflecting on the series as a whole. I can certainly assure you I'm not going anywhere just yet; I still have my last HiE story to write. And I'm certainly looking forward to the Season 10 comics. I think, like Star Trek, this fandom will endure long after the show ends.

Anyway, that's what I've got to say. Feel free to leave your own thoughts below.

Sombra died, twice. Storm King died.

5136550 Fair point actually. Although didn't Rarity say something about Sombra being 'banished to the Ether' first time around? Definitely dead now though, as you say; we saw the guy's face melt off if you go frame by frame. As for the Storm King, wasn't there a post credits thing to suggest he might still be alive in there? I'm still just Glad Celestia finally got her own back on Chrysalis and actually helped to defeat a villain.

To be fair to Tia, she did defeat her own sister that one time, and before that she did assist Luna in defeating Discord. BUT, I do take your point it's nice to see her active in the current era.

I'm also pleased that Tirek, Chrysalis and Crazy Glue weren't reformed. MLP was suffering from an over dependence on the snapshot redemption, what with Starlight, Tempest and Stygian.

Crazy Glue

:rainbowlaugh: Congratulations, you just made a redcoat spew out his tea. Definitely with you though. The narcissist, the sociopath and the moron got what was coming to them. Sometimes you do come across people who can't or won't change their ways, and I think it's good the show dealt with that.

And at least we were spared Queen Christmas turning into a multi coloured neon jellybean.
