    Bookish Delight (FINAL)

    (sort of)

    Hey, folks. This thing on?

So I was originally trying to write this big essay blogpost about where I've been and the future of Bookish and all that, but... it didn't pan out. So we'll do the much, much shorter version that should still tell you what's important.

    WELCOME TO THE FUTURE

Did you think it was over

...yeah, that's fair, so did I. Still need to talk about that when I'm able. Until then...

    ELa Famille Royale
The Zephyr Heights royals just helped change the world. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time they've done so, and they'll have to answer for that... just as soon as they work on themselves.

    Question For the Crowd!

What, in your opinion, are Equestria's most significant locations? (i.e. Canterlot, Cloudsdale, etc.)

Please keep it to... oh, top 7, and excluding Ponyville/the Everfree Forest.

Thanks to all who answer!

Bookish's Plan For World Peace · 3:45am Sep 26th, 2019

As someone who's been in fandom for 25+ years, and witnessed no less than 2,500 ship wars in real time:

If we just declared all fictional characters bi/pan/takeyourpick up front (as opposed to waiting, y'know, half a decade), we could legit save enough human energy to perpetually power a small continent.

Like Australia.

Think about it.

We could power Australia.

This is in regards to the whole Sunset thing on Twitter, isn't it?

Or a Death Star. You're thinking too small a scale, Book!

It's more that I just don't give us as a species nearly that much credit. :coolphoto:

5128203
You know, that's fair.

5128203

Oh, please.

We would totally build a colossal war machine with a major, crippling design flaw that renders the whole thing a complete waste of time. :pinkiecrazy:

To be fair, just the declaration wouldn't really be enough. I think in order for it to really work, we would have to condition everyone to just accept that not everyone is going to share their preferred ship (regardless of whether its canon or not, or well executed / has a narrative point in the former), and just let them have their fun.

I mean, isn't that what its all about? Having fun? I say:

You ship character 1 & character 2? Cool. You do that. I'll just be over here shipping character 1 w/ character 3. As long as we're respectful to one another, and don't crap on the other's preference, I say live and let live.

I think Australia is scarier. Especially an Australia where the wildlife has unlimited access to electricity.

5128241
Two words: Electric Emus!

5128231
It can certainly work. That was how Monochromatic and I came to a mutually satisfactory compromise at Bronycon on RariTwi vs. Sunlight. That and exploiting parallel universes. :derpytongue2:

5128257
Regular emus were enough to win a war. Cyborg emus could conquer the world...

Why limit it to fictional people? There are enough tropes to suggest that true monosexuality is a myth, and we already semi-jokingly assume that homophobes are closeted gay dudes because it's happened enough times.

What if you want them to be asexual? :B

5128306
You know, Rarity and Sunset have great chemistry too, I feel like an obvious third option may have been overlooked.

5128333
Not so much overlooked as unrepresented. This is Mono and me we're talking about.

5128306

Regular emus were enough to win a war. Cyborg emus could conquer the world...

Gaia help us if we got cyborg cassowaries.

5128215
Which is why I didn't say "build." :P

5128312
👍

5128326
Sure! Wouldn't stop the shipping one phracking bit, mind, but it'd cut down on the wars sufficiently, I'm sure.

5128345
The key is to be like me and jump ship entirely to Sci-Twi, who can legit be in polys with Rares and Sunset with zero writing difficulty~

5128231
Oh it wouldn't stop the partner vs partner wars at all. But cutting down a huge swath of the stupid orientation squabbling BS on its own would make fandom so much of a better place. Especially the straight-or-bust stuff. :P

5128389
Y'know, that's fair.

Especially the straight-or-bust stuff. :P

I've gone on extensive tirades about this exact thing (like I'm probably about to do right now). It's like the people who are in the het-or-die camp can't even comprehend that homosexuality exists, that it can be healthy, or that they actually love each other and aren't just degenerate sexual deviants. Or that people who like homosexual-sex ships aren't necessarily anti heterosexual-sex ships.

Personally, I don't care what the genders of the characters in a relationship are; I care if the relationship is well executed, seems like it's healthy, and doesn't come across as forced or simply putting it in for the sake of checking a box. Hell, some of my favorite romantic couples are heterosexual pairings: Usagi and Mamoru from Sailor Moon, Akira and Miki from Devilman, Luke and Mara Jade from Star Wars Legends, Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor from The Terminator, etc.. But I also like well executed homosexual pairings, not because of their sexuality, but because they're well executed: Willow and Tara from Buffy, Touya and Yukito from Cardcaptor Sakura, Izetta and Finé in Izetta: The Last Witch, Ruby and Saphire in Steve Universe, etc.

Okay. I'm done.

I eventually coined the phrase "quality, not qualities" for the mindset you're professing here; whatever you decide to write, I care only that you wrote it well.

Honestly the best part of this hypothetical scenario isn't simply that we could power Australia (though hey that is a nice perk!) but rather the knowledge that once we got to that place it would in fact mean Mainstream Media had accepted the idea that LGBTQIA sexualities are not intrinsically Adult and thus Off Limits and were thus consistently comfortable being Completely Open about this sort of thing right out of the gate instead of mawkishly implying it through innuendo or waiting until the series has run its course.
So yes.
Here's to stepping into that better world some day.

5128467
The "LGBT topics are adult topics" thing makes me want to scream. 90% of big, mainstream kiddie fare has kissing in it, but gay kissing is only for 18+? WTF. It's so stupid that the sheer idiocy is almost more offensive than the bigotry. Almost.

One time when I was taking Japanese, I brought in the original language version of Card Captor Sakura for us to watch so we could hear the language in a "natural" setting. But, after one student wouldn't shut up about how it was different from the Americanized version, and he pointed out Yukito and said "Rumor has it this guy's gay.", I kinda lost it on him and went over all the various LGBTQ relationships in the show. The class went dead silent, and one girl behind me said "And this is a kid's show?"

I cannot fully convey my desire to scream at that moment.

Intentionally misreading context is a longstanding comedic tradition!

any joke structure that was good enough for Airplane! is good enough for me

5128467
In all seriousness, this is the dream, and I think we'll hit the tipping point where most media stops caring about the grumbling within a generation or two.
