The Worst of Bad Horse: Table of contents · 8:41pm Jul 8th, 2019

The Worst of Bad Horse
Thanks to the tireless work of RBDash471, and to me being unemployed, I'm coming out with a big book at Bronycon.  It's 730 pages, with 54 stories, scripts, and poems. You've seen all these before, except for:

  • "A Carrot for Miss Fluttershy", which is available on fimfiction, but not listed as a story because it's a script
  • "Think Inside the Box", a New 6 script which has never been posted anywhere
  • the final chapter to "Moments", by Grand_Moff_Pony and myself, which isn't posted to fimfiction yet because I may first do some revisions to get it onto Equestria Daily
  • "Celerity": not the 900-word version in "The Twilight Zone", but a 2300-word version with a different ending

Also, 21 new essays totalling over 60,000 words.2

The paperback version will cost $20 and a hardcover $30.  You can look over its table of contents on this Google spreadsheet, which has links to all the content.

  • Everyone can read the Introduction, Acknowledgements, and Appendix.

    • Please let me know if I left you out of the Acknowledgements.  I may have left you out of a particular category which you merited; I didn't list people twice when the two categories overlapped in meaning.
  • All my Patreon patrons in the $2+/10,000-word tiers should be able to read everything right now.
  • The whole thing will eventually be available for free in .epub and .mobi.
  • Better start with the Intro, which explains why I keep talking about Plato.

I'll post again within the next day or two to describe the other book I'll have at Bronycon, and to ask who wants to buy a printed copy of either book at Bronycon.

[1] Not literally tireless. He's pretty tired out right now. I sent him 20,000 words of corrections last week.

[2] If the Guinness Book of World Records has a category for "number of author's notes in a book that are longer than the stories they're notes to", I may already be a winner.

This is a crazy-ambitious book and I'm super excited for people to see it.

Briefly looking at the table of contents, I really like the decision to split the last chapter of Fluttershy's Night Out.

Also, it seems the Acknowledgements doesn't have a hyperlink, in case it was supposed to.

There are so many reasons I'm annoyed I can't be at BC this year. This is definitely one of them.

You'll be able to buy a copy via Lulu after the con!

Congrats, BH! I can't wait to sign copies of these when people start mistaking me for you again. :raritywink:

Y'all damn well better bring one just for me. Imma be pissed when the whole bookstore sells out within twenty minutes.

(Mine looks absolutely awesome, by the way. I'll post about it when I get the proof copy.)

Jesus! So that’s what you’ve been up to!

Interesting (not sure if my friend Julian will ever come up with some comments, he having some questions IRL for now), but then it basically boils down to 'many stories in this antology being just as edible to me (say) as diamonds to ponies' ..... Classification is good, but then max I can extract from this 'don't set your hopes too high because some _groups_ of readers most likely will find your writing incompatible with their inner demands". Not too small finding, but I hope at some time somepony will move beyond classification stage.

5087841 What do you mean by classification, & what would be moving beyond it?

I mean you assembled quite big tome of local fiction writing, and lastly tried to show how this modern literature represent some quite old battle between at least three 'school' of thoughts, right? So, I sadly only can say I should agree with you in sense my own acceptance or non-acceptance of specific story may have little with common with how other readers will (or how they supposed to) react to very same text...It seems you have analytical mind, and like to share your findings (even if just with few who actually like to think alongside you, around and far away).)

By going beyond classification I mean ..we do all this philosophing not just showing off, right? We want to make some useful conclusions from our thinking, and trying to impleent them... I for example today is quite interesting in finding ways to make at least some humans more resistive to various forms of peer pressure (because any kind of self-replcating change requre a lot of effort today, in basically any area, I think ..). For example I noticed how various talanted humans quite deterministically resist joining forces together ..so, this works as force keeping them/us from discovering something that only can be created by combining various angles of view/feelings/thinking. Combining some ideas from different humans into something working in this real life seems to be ..very uneasy art.

I used to like finding new boks/articles and read them - but now? What exactly I can extract from all those papers, and most importantly - with whom I can pair (and multiply... as in +1, +1+ somepony else, +somepony else ... not biological but idea-logical growth, and practice))? I have few friends and interesting authors... but myself .. I have no steam to propel myself at some spotlight place (and those spotlight places tend to do some corrosion to ideas/"ideals" too ... to the point things become non-working parodies on themselves). Reading was useful under assumption I will help some, or I will be helped by some[p]one. I realize those conditions will most likely never come true for me, beyond some very basic things like 'living my life with my dog'. may be other humans will ebe in better position ..but so far it seems current vactor of movement for teh 'huan civilization' is basically fixed. I dislike both current 'side-effects' and even not so completely complete crash in the future (long past my death time, i think).

I worry about others, but not in they way i tried to do before ... I used to be more responisble to 'help me/us' messages. I think this lost of desire to help also should be studied .. because real-world humans have only finite resistance to surrounding them factors. And in my case ..I'm broken quite before my physical end come.
