Don't read further if you don't want any "spoilers".
You've read further, I assume you don't mind tiny spoilers, granted you've probably already watched the premiere. Anyway, the first episode, or episodes, of Season 3 have left me completely empty handed with any sort of material I can use to write any sort of fic. Seriously, King Sombra has no personality, no background, nothing to work off of. I can't even fathom how little I know about the main villain of the opening season except for the fact that his magic is pretty bitchin'.
The crystal ponies leave much to be desired for, practically no details about them are given and their "history" consists of fun things they do at the fair. Sigh, not much to work with here. There's not much special about them either, other than that they sparkle.
And other than that, especially as a predominantly comedic fic writer, the episode left little to work with except for GAK and that's just... not something I'm willing to work with.
The episode/s were good, I liked them, but I walk away empty handed.
Sigh, I can't even think of any sort of fic I could write about the season opener. I'm ridiculously bummed right now.
Oh well, at least season 3 is here. I have work to do and fics to write, so I'll get on that as soon as I can.
Otherwise, it's going to be a long couple of days watching the fics about the season opener roll in. Can't wait to see how many GAK fics are about to be written. Ah well, I'll enjoy it while it happens. Maybe for once I'll sit back and enjoy the fics instead of writing my own.
Anyway, that's pretty much it, just wanted to give my two bits on the season opener (which I didn't really do) and provide a quick update. So, yeah, I'm not dead. Maybe I'll just write something about the season opener anyway, just because I'm bored. Maybe something about Rarity and being crystal.
Well, that's about it. Season 3 kicked off well, could've been better, but 40 minutes is a small window to work with.
I hope you enjoyed the first episodes, I know I did. Rarity was too best pony in this episode to not like it.

I see what you mean. The whole two-parter pretty much resolved itself, and it seems that the Crystal Empire could be more or less brushed to the side. The episodes really only focused on stalling Sombra, keeping Cadance the barrier maiden active, and finding the plot device, and while that might have minimized any possibility of characterization, the writers didn't do anything with the few lines they gave him. He might as well have been saying "Brains." Come to think of it, considering how he went out once the Crystal Heart powered up, I can't help but wonder if Sombra was even a living creature at all.
I also noticed that they put Sombra and the Crystal Empire about a thousand years back (Approximation, since this was clearly pre-Nightmare Moon). If the next few ancient returning evils in the series don't get put into other time ranges, I think we'll have established that the first few years of Celestia's reign sucked.
By the way, what's GAK?
Dude... The ideas are literally exploding from my mind. I had some before, but now... My mind can't take the excitement. And yes, I think Rarity took Best pony position from Twilight again.

As I would agree with Sombra would have little characteristic to correctly portray him as how Discord/Chrysalis did with the Mane6, but I can imagine it'll be a gold mine for Fanfic writers to be creativie and craft their own version of him with little-to-no retaliation from the fanbase (and their fandom). King Sombra wasn't entirely bad seeing how he can withstand magic blast of 2 princesses and can regenerate his limbs back (like his horn and such). You have to admit bonus points for him bringing slavery into Equestria (you know, for kids) and cursed an entire kindgom before he left.

They did leave out a lot of details, either they want us to fill them in or they are leaving more for later. You can at least look forward to some of the cool episodes from the rest of the season, if you don't already know I posted some info in My journal. I liked the crystal ponies, though I would like to know more same as everyone else.
490454 I'm under the impression that this is the case. The factors that would shorten this stretch of the timeline are:
1. How long it would take for Celestia and Luna to become corulers post-Discord
2. Luna becoming bitter and envious (or being attacked by something)
Basically, I'm assuming it's a little over a thousand years back, like 1015 or 1022 years.

Some people (before today) figured that the premiere was so huge that the commercial time would be the Super Bowl, maybe even bigger than that! 490876 In the simplest possible sense, canon refers to what is regarded as what is standard and established within something. To a story like MLP:FiM, canon is basically what has been established as true by the official source material: plot events, characters, that sort of thing. It's also relevant in Christianity with canon law, where you look at doctrines, practices and beliefs of the religion/denomination in question.
As you can see, a meme is something completely different.
