MLP villain rankings: Queen Chrysalis · 10:44pm Feb 13th, 2019

0/10 - AWFUL (unsalvageable, never should have been made, wouldn't recommend to anyone)
1/10 - HORRIBLE/BORING (tedious, hurts to watch, a bore, no reason to watch him/her, whatever positive things about him/her are tiny and not enough)
2/10 - VERY BAD (slightly less terrible, maybe there were one or two things you liked kept him/her from being a 1 but still very painful)
3/10 - BAD (the kind of bad where you're checking your watch over and over to see how much time is left before he/she gets off the screen)
4/10 - MEDIOCRE (not awful but not really that good either)
5/10 - EH (average, didn't love or hate him/her)
6/10 - DECENT (the first positive rating on this list, fine overall, glad you saw him/her once but wouldn't watch him/her again)
7/10 - GOOD (enjoyable enough that you'd maybe watch him/her again in future, had some noteworthy flaws but is overall a worthwhile villain)
8/10 - GREAT (a solid, enjoyable villain, very entertaining)
9/10 - EXCELLENT (very engaging, awesome, you definitely recommend to anyone)
10/10 - MASTERPIECE (extremely engaging, an absolute must-see)

Queen Chrysalis

From the moment of her debut in A Canterlot Wedding, Chrysalis was, for lack of a better word, loved. Right off the bat, she became adored for having the flair of a classic Disney villain with a kickass song to boot. And for good reason, she is massively entertaining. But I’d be lying if I said she was ever a competent villain.

In A Canterlot Wedding, she raised Twilight’s suspicions by acting out-of-character as Cadance and imprisoned her in the same general area as the real Cadance, thus giving Twilight the opportunity to find her and escape, which led to her defeat.

She didn’t bother capturing Starlight or even Discord in To Where And Back Again, which led to her second defeat. Though that was the fault of the writers deliberately kneecapping the Mane Six and Princesses in order to shill Starlight and make her the only one who could save the day.

And of course, her plan in The Mean Six which never had a prayer of working to begin with and ended up accomplishing absolutely nothing, pretty much rendering that entire episode pointless.

But despite not being the smartest villain, she’s still an absolute joy a watch. A villain can have a competent plan but that won’t save them if they’re boring. And Chrysalis is far from boring. If anything, her chewing the scenery whenever she appears just makes me more excited to see her get defeated. You think Discord or Tirek became fan-favourites because “he was such a great planner”?

And while she kinda suffered from Darth Maul Syndrome in Seasons 6-8 (being brought back just to make bronies cream themselves), the writers thankfully used her much better in Season 9 and made her more cunning while still keeping her entertainment value. The only way she could’ve been used badly would be if she was brought back to be given a shitty sobstory and/or a shitty redemption.

Oh, if only she’d been in the Season 8 finale...

8/10 GREAT

Yeah, admittedly in terms of her competence she's pretty abysmal but I do like seeing her slide further and further down the insanity drain as time goes on. Sadistic of me I'm sure but hey, whatcha gonna do?

Yeah, I would have more respect for her if she would just let go of the Villain Ball.

I hindsight, maybe I should've posted Chrysalis' ranking on Valentines Day today. Y'know, creature that feeds off love and all. :rainbowlaugh:

Hah! That might have fit.
Though frankly, giving Chryssi's usual success rate having her be a day early or a day late for Valentine's kind of fits her. XD

What I want for her? Reformation. That's all I want.

Precisely. It would completely undermine her character.

Besides, she's so much fun!

5228954 If Chrysalis was going to change she would've done it when the rest of her hive changed. But she refused. And even before then she had no reason to try to get revenge when it was her own decision to invade Canterlot. Even if she wanted to feed her subjects that didn't have to result in an invasion or a kidnapping, that's hardly a way to make a good first impression.

It certainly got pony-changeling relations off to a very bad start.
