An Empty Horizons Poem · 5:20pm Jan 7th, 2019
Thanks to DualKitsune for writing this!
Dumka
Come, sit a spell,
And hear a tale
Of the time our golden empire fell
And of the ones on whom our hopes dwell,
Even though the invasion they failed to quell
Plunging us all into this hell.
On that day,
I am sad to say:
Love’s Triumphant Chorus was tainted,
Cruel Deceit the conductor
leading a corrupting aria of ambition.
Harmony’s chosen beaten
Green and endless dreams their captor
while Black Arrogance feasted
On a Love weakened- and defeated.
Harmony falters,
A silent corrosion,
Creeps- dark and cold,
Destiny alters,
With an eager incision;
A new story told.
Harmony’s sextet set free,
The bright homeland no more-
Only a twisted mirror
Devoid of ordered symphony or Chaos’ cacophony.
This magicless earthen canopy,
(Empty of Honesty) resigns your lives to useless lore,
An ancient lullaby of memories growing fainter.
So how shall the symphony begin?
The joyous ponies you loved are lost forever,
can the canzonetta still make you grin?
Even as the isles crumble to the sea
And the corrosion lurking within?
Each day is a fight
In the wind there are no whispers of flight
The sky is an empty promise,
But gold and power fill the mind with Avarice.
Will you bring an Unfailing rhapsody?
Or be broken by predatory reality?
From the moment this began
A glimmering waltz you played,
With elegance and magic the pillars of your plan,
But their hearts have strayed.
Noblesse Oblige and Generosity
Hold no sway
So, into wealth and silence will you flee
Or in the face of apathy and selfishness,
Turn away, and a cold requiem play?
Malic, enmity, cruelty, and pride
So far from your humble home,
Surely, you have only cried
A lament of benevolent memories.
Corrosion comes, a ravaging syndrome,
Kindness makes a slumbering saint,
Magic holds you close, reciting unending litanies
(Ignorant of the cost)
Frees you of the sickening taint.
Magic burning so brightly
Hold onto the past tightly.
Grip it with both hooves,
This world is filled with ravening wolves,
Consuming all that is good.
Search for a hope in the falsehood
And with all that you have:
Be Brave
Be Strong
For all that is Wrong-
All that Rages
All that Vexes
And Corrodes-
Has chosen you as its abode
Singing a ricercar
Of unease.
In this Empty world,
Will you fall to the legion of perils?
Or sink below the cold of the crashing netherworld?
as the Harmony finally Lulls.
Or Rise
And fill the sky
From Horizon to Horizon
With a symphony that denies,
All that has gone awry-
Changing this heartless tale with unflinching determination!
Yet the chance will remain,
(Though you may be of one accord)
That destruction was preordained
This rotting home’s infection must go uncured
And all that you may give,
Is one last Pavane.
I don't know too much about verse. I stay far away from it, because I don't understand it. I like the cozy realm of prose, where things are what they look like and meaning comes from actions taken and words spoken. That said, I felt some satisfaction when I first read this poem. Maybe it's just because it was inspired by my own writing. Maybe it's because I don't know any better. If you know about verse and how it works, then I'm sure that DualKitsune would appreciate someone that knows about poetry giving their thoughts.
AAAH!!! It lives!!! Thanks, GoldenWing!
And yes, I would appreciate questions, comments, and concerns.
I don't know much poetry or what kind of rhythm this is meant to have, if any, but it read like a pretty great poem to me. It captures the broadest conflict of all really well: can Twilight and friends restore the dying light in a world that barely realizes how dark it's getting?
Also autocorrect tried to replace "poem" with "porn" when I wrote this. Please Google, I'm not THAT depraved!
