[Movie] SO APPARENTLY · 7:17pm Oct 7th, 2017

I have to break my radio silence for this.

My friend just linked me this paragraph regarding an older version of the film. Let's just say, I don't know what to think, especially if this was really true.

While Sony was still attached, there was a whole treatment of the film that originally concerned Twilight and her friends dealing with the return of an evil alicorn named Cosmos, who is implied to be Celestia and Luna's brother, resulting in friction between Twilight and Celestia over the former's capacity to handle the situation. Executives who looked over the treatment complained of severe Continuity Lockout and numerous Plot Holes regarding the characters and setting, which would have resulted in a much more limited audience than desirable. Judging from Meghan McCarthy's assurances that the movie wouldn't play out like an extended TV episode, it would seem the creative team took Sony's push for a more self-contained story to heart (albeit ignoring their suggestion of one set in the real world à la The Smurfs).

If you don't know why this throws me into a tizzy, then take a look at Repercussions if you care enough to find out.

It's like they read the story, took the premise, right down to the villain's name, and rewrote it to fit into a G-rated 105 page script.

In the words of Rarity, I can't even right now.

Source?

4690195 Well, that's TV tropes, but it's not an actual source. Where is this rumor coming from? Was it mentioned in an interview? Was it published in a magazine? TV Tropes is community created content, but unlike Wikipedia it doesn't encourage citing sources, and until it does, it could be anyone's addition for whatever reason, true or false.

It did say that this information came about during the Sony hack. I'll look for a different source to solidify this.

If this is true, it's time to finally admit you're psychic. :ajsmug:

Off-topic: If it's also true that they were going to do a "Smurfs" style film at one point, let us all take a moment to breathe a collective sigh of relief that this didn't happen.

I wish I had definite confirmation for this.

I know, right? I've "predicted" things happening in the show in my writing before, but this is unnervingly uncanny.

Now I need to somehow bump into Meghan McCarthy at a convention and ask her off the record what this character's design was.

4690568 TBH I'd be pretty proud of ya if/when it gets confirmation, but also in all honesty, I'd also be pissed with Sony, they don't have the best ideas for movies a lot of the time, but had they literally stolen your idea, it would have opened the doors to a LOT, and I mean a LOT of legal issues with fan fiction vs copyright vs ownership of works based on it.

4690568 IKR? Like my fic about Luna dream walking way back in 2012, and then Somepony to Watch Over me comes out with the same premise in 2014?

It was most likely an insane coincidence. What I find very funny about this whole thing is I seem to have a penchant for coming up with MLP villains (at least in some regards) that could possibly exist. One thing I remember back when I was writing this was a lot of people kept making fun of the villain's name. It possibly came this close to being canon. Another villain name I got some flak for was Daybreak Aurora, and I have actual confirmation Starlight's original last name was going to be Aurora, but they had to change it to Glimmer (maybe for legal reasons I think?).

All that said, I really do think fanfic should be commercially allowed under copyright law. It's a whole facet of intertextuality, a concept that's existed since the days of Homer, that we're losing out on since one can't really make a living writing fanfics.

Don't forget the Pinkie Pie Watches Paint Dry story. One thing I came up with that the show does (this is more in line with what I usually "predict") was an initial, integral plot device of Repercussions was Twilight encountering a very important and rare history book that had the most crucial page torn out--something a few people lambasted me for. A very similar plot device surfaced in the S3 opener some years later.

I've spoken with a few people about this, such as Jim Miller, and he said something along the lines of phenomena like this are only natural since there's only so many directions the series can go, and fans are bound to come up with things they'll use in the series at some point if they pay attention to the canon.

4690953 Yeah. Just based on statistical probability,

fans are bound to come up with things they'll use in the series

M.A. Larson told me as much.
