    Old Stories

They say that everything old is new again. Sometimes that's true, I think.

    G5 - Where is Sunny's Mom?

Where, indeed, is Sunny's mother? We see Argyle, her dad, and the movie very strongly implies he's dead -- or has been missing for years, presumed dead -- but there's no sign of her mother anywhere.

Similarly, Sprout's mother Phyllis features prominently, but there's no sign of his father.

    Dune - go see it

What the title says, basically. The new Dune movie is seriously good, and if you like Dune, or sweeping SF epics in general, you should go see it, preferably on the biggest screen you can. It's gorgeous! The movie follows the book much better than the Lynch film did, and lets the environment play a big role, as is fitting.

Just in case it needs to be said:

If you haven't already, go get vaccinated against Covid-19, ASAP. The vaccines are safe and they work.

Do not try any of the purported "cures" like hydroxichloroquin or, sigh, ivermectin.

In case it wasn't obvious yet...

No, I do not want Nazis in this fandom.

I don't want stories about cutesy Nazi OCs, who exist to give "ironic" cover to actual Nazis and racists, and to normalize Nazi presence in MLP fandom.

Post-Con Feelings (Worldcon 75, not Bronycon!) · 3:42pm Aug 14th, 2017

The first ever Worldcon in Finland is over, and I'm making a note here: a huge success! :twistnerd:

No, literally. Depending on how you count, it was apparently the 2nd or 3rd biggest Worldcon ever, anywhere. Which explains the crowding issues; sorry about that, folks! (I was just a lowly security volunteer / logistics staff member, but still.) I don't think anyone expected it would be this big an event. Thankfully, the con staff could rustle some extra program space from Messukeskus, alleviating the problem a lot. But all that aside, we Finnish fans are totally stoked by this. It was awesome to see so many people coming from all over the world to Helsinki, to celebrate our shared geeky fun and fandom subculture. :yay:

Congrats to all the Hugo winners, too; you can see the list here: Hugo Award winners 2017 (complete with some interesting data about the nominations and voting, if you're into that kind of nerdery).

Saw a lot of friends and acquaintances; encountered a number of SF and fantasy authors, cartoonists, and more; went to a bunch of interesting panels and presentations; cheered at the Hugo awards ceremony; had to rush off several times to get more T-shirts for sale; bought more books than I can probably fit into my already crammed bookshelves; and overall had a lot of fun, despite weariness and the worst thunderstorm in years.

And now, time to start preparing for the Dublin Worldcon in 2019...

Great to hear Lurks! :yay:

Awesome! It's also really cheering to see the numbers stay strong for Hugo voting even with the Puppies having taken their ball and gone home. And there was a good crop of nominees this year.
