I found Canterlot! · 10:13pm Jul 18th, 2017
If Equestria Girls were to exist in our world... Where exactly would they be? I'd always assumed they were somewhere in New York and with the newest Equestria Girls movie it appears my husband and I have found a likely spot.
This is Adirondack state park in New York state. Look familiar?
How about now?
So that was fairly easy. Hubby was born in Queens. Figuring out the location of Canterlot would take a little longer. We took into account a few big things.
One: Size- Canterlot is a small town as Canterlot High appears to be a Jr/Senior High and crystal Prep is a private school.
Two: Weather- From both the four movies three specials and comic books we have been able to see that on average Canterlot is warm enough to allow skirts but cool enough that long socks were needed. Snow was also seen depicted
Three: Location- Crystal Prep was what got my husband thinking about the town being on the border to a more affluent state. Or in this case states.
Four: Camp Everfree- The fact they were able to drive using a regular school bus to Camp Everfree indicates that Canterlot is near a interstate.
With all of this Data we began searching carefully before we found it.
Canterlot in our world is Kingston New York.
In fact a funny note but while doing research I found an article how graduation rates were on the rise in the only public highschool. Kingston High.
This is so nerdy it’s great.
A certain view of Kingston NY:

I can't stop laughing. :D
This is so coo! See how great the internet can be. It is nice to see it used for something positive.
I think the pictures say it all:
Equestria is real. It's out there.
Going to be honest. I could probably find a place similar here in Montana.
As a school bus driver, in order to drive a regular public school bus to a camp requires it to be within the same state (at least, if you don't have a CDL to cross state lines), so I would be a little hesitant given the time it took for the trip.
Still, New York is a big state horizontally. I wouldn't argue that you're more than likely on the nose.
Kings-Town. Very nice.
Camp Everfree kinda reminds me of Evergreen Kentucky. Next to no one lives there, inhospitable forest (still beautiful), whacked out weather and weird local legends.

Yes, we know the show is a Canadian production for a Rhode Island based company.
As with any such hypothetical, YMMV. Having said that, if anyone has evidence suggesting another candidate location then we would be just as interested to hear both the location and rationale.
It's a thought exercise and that's the fun of it.
