Critical Mass Chapter 1 Deleted Scene · 6:08pm Jul 1st, 2017

Well, since Chapter 3 isn't coming out today, how about a deleted scene instead? I wrote this and enjoyed writing it, but it felt out of place in the story. This scene takes place immediately after Twilight tells her parents that she is dating Rainbow.

"I... I know, but..." Twilight trailed off, sighing. "It's... it's... too soon... It... it doesn't matter..." she trailed off, growing despondent. She hesitantly sat up again and removed her hooves from her face, though still stared down at her empty plate with an equally empty gaze. She glanced at Rainbow out of the corner of her eye, and her gaze lingered for a few seconds. Rainbow looked at her with a soft, apologetic, yet reassuring smile. Twilight sighed and slumped down further, then looked back at her plate. She closed her eyes, then took a deep breath and swallowed, then slowly exhaled. She pulled herself back up into a sitting position and parted her mouth. "I... um..." she grimaced and turned to face Rainbow, then slowly pulled her gaze back over to her parents. "I'm... dating Rainbow..." she trailed off cautiously.

Velvet and Night Light smiled warmly, their gazes looking over both mares. "You finally found somepony! Oh, this is wonderful! I was afraid that I wouldn't live to see the day!" Velvet shouted out happily, then pulled her chair out and ran around to pull Twilight into a hug.

Twilight grunted from the force behind the hug. "M-mom!"

Velvet let up on the hug and pulled back a little. "Oh, I'm sorry dear," she apologized, tilting her head to the side. She brought a forehoof around and wiped at her eye. "I'm just... so happy for you!" She pulled Twilight back into another hug.
Night Light calmly stood from his chair. "I'm happy for you too, Twilight..." he trailed off as he walked around to Rainbow. Rainbow chuckled nervously as Night Light approached her. He leaned in closer to her ear, though Rainbow pulled back slightly. "I could tell, by the way," he whispered, then pulled back, still smiling warmly. "She seems happy, and... well, whenever she talked about her friends and the conversation shifted to you..." he trailed off, chuckling lightly.

"Uh... r-right..." Rainbow shifted her weight in her chair and looked over at Twilight.

Velvet finally pulled back from Twilight, still smiling, then her expression hardened. "While Shining Armor and Cadance have a foal, that doesn't mean we don't want you to have foals too, Twilight!"

Twilight clenched her eyes closed and turned away from her. "M-mom! It's... t-too soon for that! We've..." she trailed off, opening her eyes and turning around to face her friend. "We've not... been together that long..." She grimaced and ruffled her wings, then turned back to her mom. "Can we... please... not talk about this?" she implored.

Velvet sighed and relented. "Okay... but don't think you're getting away without telling us everything..." she said, her gaze jumping to glance at Rainbow. The pegasus shuddered. Velvet smiled sweetly.

"Maybe we should clean up the table first, then we could talk over a game of O and O?" Night Light suggested.

Rainbow did a double take, her eyes widening. "Wait, you like Ogres and Oubliettes?"

"Oh great," Twilight and Velvet groaned. Twilight closed her eyes, then laid her head down flat on the table, still groaning.

Night Light nodded enthusiastically. "You've heard of it!?" he asked excitedly, ignoring the two groans.

Rainbow nodded. "Yeah. I've only played it a couple times before. My first time, Spike, Discord, and Big Macintosh were playing it when we got back from a girls night out. Discord had used his magic to actually bring the game to life! It was so awesome!"

Night Light looked at Rainbow in awe. "He can do that!?"

"Oh yeah, it was really sweet! I was a rogue and Pinkie Pie was a bard!" Rainbow paused, tilting her head to the side. "Although, it could have been better," she mused, tapping her hoof to her chin. "Spike was the DM."

Night Light frowned. "He wasn't that bad the last time we played and he was the DM..." he trailed off, shaking his head. "Just wait until you see the campaigns I've planned!"

"Want some help setting it up?" Rainbow asked, hopping out of her chair.

"Come on!" Night Light exclaimed before all but running out of the kitchen. Rainbow dashed off after him.

Twilight blinked and sighed. "My dad just ran off with my marefriend..." she said dryly.

"Well, I guess I'd better get this cleaned up..." Velvet said, smiling apologetically. "I hope you didn't need to be anywhere early tomorrow, I get the feeling that it's going to be a long evening."

Twilight flexed her eyebrows upward and hopped off her chair. "Yeah..." she sighed. "I can help you clean up, I guess..."

Rainbow poked her head back into the dining room. "Twilight, why didn't you tell me your dad liked O and O?"

Twilight grimaced and hesitantly looked over at her. "Where do you think my brother got his enjoyment for the game from?"

And that's the deleted scene. I hope you enjoyed reading it. I'm sharing it because I enjoyed it, and I wrote it, but didn't use it in the story, but it would have been a shame not to share it.
