I've been invited to a podcast

This blog is pretty easily summed up by the title. I've been invited to appear on a podcast, specifically The Barcast. They interview a variety of notable, or perhaps notorious, people from among the fandom and I'm their latest choice. I'd say they must be scraping the bottom of the barrel in that case, but I'm too flattered by the attention to say no. They are taking audience questions here (

New DF: Extra Stuff and still doing things!

The title honestly says it all. I just published a new chapter of Dresden Fillies: Extra Stuff, which is the collection of odds and ends of Dresden/MLP crossover that doesn't quite fit into my main stories. In this case it's a story inspired by a reader comment 'What if Fluttershy picked up one of the Blackened Denarius?". My answer to that was so involved (over 13K words) that I considered

Not dead yet, but not writing either

So this is a blog post I should have done a while ago and I'm sorry for not saying something sooner. As it turns out, the final year of getting my doctorate is the most time-consuming thing I've ever done in my life. Between a full 40 hours a week fulfilling school requirements, having a part-time job on the side to continue living and maintaining the bare minimum of social interaction with

Things to come. · 2:25am Oct 7th, 2012

Hello everyone, it's your friendly neighborhood psychicscubadiver again.

Chapter Nine is in the process of being edited, but in the meantime I got to thinking about my next story. False Masks isn't going to end anytime soon, but I'd like to get your input on what I do afterwards. And yes before anyone asks there will be a third installment of the Dresden Fillies, but I'd like to write something different in between the two of them. This blog is to get your opinions on my ideas, because I don't have anywhere near enough time to explore them all.

Option One
Fantasy Human in Equestria. There exists a hidden society of humans deep within the northern mountains in place where nopony can reach. However, one explorer manages to survive the trip and shares his tale as a storyteller. But nothing is ever so simple. Not when something seems to have followed him all the way to Ponyville. This one would feature a world in which humans not only existed in Equestria, but also have their own magic system. It will not feature the 'humans are the real monsters' trope nor genocide at the hooves of the ponies. It's an adventure fic not a dark one.

Option Two
Sci-fi Human in Equestria. After a war ruins Earth most of the remaining population flees into space. Three hundred years later a small exploratory ship makes an emergency landing on a strange planet as its electrical systems begin failing. Take a wild guess where in Equestria they show up. This one isn't the most original of premises but after all of the 'military spaceship finds Equestria' stories I wanted to do something with a small scientific contingent. One trained for the possibility of first contact and prepared to analyze foreign environments. And yes there will be a stronger plot than 'scientists screwing around'. Especially once the Princesses find out they are there...

Option Three
A beta-crossover of MLP and Firefly. Meaning that it would be MLP characters in a Firefly world, i.e. Rainbow Dash is the captain of Sunrise a Firefly class transport. This one would probably be the biggest project, probably cosisting of multiple stories much like the Dresden Fillies. This is actually the route I scripted out the least, but I like some of the idea's I've come up. The first 'episode' would follow the show for the most part, but beyond that it would involve different plots, I'd introduce some different villains and different heists. I'll probably follow some of the same plot lines (especially some stuff from Serenity) and steal some jokes, but really I'd like to explore the characters of the mane six after growing up in that 'verse.

Wow, long post. Anyway just tell me what you all think. As always I make no promises, but I do value your input.

So, what would you like to see?

My opinion would go for option 1, from the three choices.

Option Four:

All the above. :trollestia:

I like option one - I'd really like to see your take on a human magic system in Equestria.

Option 2 please

Option 3. Easily. There needs to be one.

Both one and two sound awesome... not sure about three though.

Also you totally got me into the Dresden Files series I just bought Grave Peril yesterday//dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/misc_Lyra.png

I personally would say option one. Option two is a pretty common story setup, though it would be interesting to see your take on it, and option three, well... I know next to nothing about firefly.

Option one on the other hand, it would be interesting to see how you would pull off the 'humans have always been there' angle of it, as well as the human magic system and their relationships with pony society. :pinkiehappy:

Option 1, only because Admiral Tigerclaw has already done the best scientist in Equestria story, and I think you could pull of the human magic better than most.

fantasy adventure fic with it's own magic system? yes please.:pinkiehappy:

Option one sounds great, I'd recommend against three, not that I don't love Firefly but your first one sounds awesome and original, and trust me there's one thing we desperately need on fimfiction it's originality

I think they all sound quite promising. Though as a "Breather Story" between Dresden Fillies 2&3 I would say Option One would be best suited. It would let you use some not quite Dresden compatible ideas that I'm sure have popped up while writing the first two. Option Three would probably be the least suitable, given the multi-story potential you mentioned. Two significantly different epic story lines being written simultaneously will frequently cause excessive stress and detract from a authors desire to write resulting in a decline in both stories. So, guess I'm trying to say that, Option Three should prolly be saved fer after ya finish wit' da Dresden Fillies. Ya have yerself a good night ya hear?

407157 Funny... his Dresden Fillies stories got me into ponies!

Option one sounds good.

Option one seems fine. Quite original, actually, especially the "human magic system". That sounds incredibly intriguing.

Option two is... meh. I mean, the concept is intriguing, but there's only so much you can write about this. Plus, since I doubt it can be one-manned, a military spaceship usually means an entourage of OC's and that's the point where the story either leaps off with deep, interesting characters or falls flat on its face, wondering what went wrong.

Option three... can't say anything, really. Never watched Firefly.

But that's just my opinion.

While I know nothing of Firefly I am sure it would be good no matter what. However I would personally pick option 1 over 2 but I like both. But don't let me direct your life do it yourself.

option 1 please

All of these options seem to be interesting to me, especially coming from an author such as yourself. I would recommend doing option one... and the rest eventually. Option three actually sounds the most interesting to me, though I wouldn't recommend taking up such an ambitious project in the middle of writing the Dresden Fillies series of fics; perhaps once you have that storyline tied up nice and neatly one day. Option two, as you stated, is perhaps the most unoriginal of the three, but I'd like to see your take on things.

tl;dr: Option one.

I like option 1

Hmm...I have no issue with fantasy human in equestria...but entire fantasy human civilization in equestria? ehh...:trixieshiftleft:

On the other hand, you're absolutely right about every sci-fi "ship crashes on equestria" story featuring a military ship, so a version with a science/exploration vessel sounds mighty appealing.

and both offer the chance for Twilight to go full on egghead mode, one with magic and the other with technology, so they both have that going for them.

hmm...I say option 2! FOR SCIENCE!

Option one sounds pretty good. I love you already for not going with the whole 'evil humans' thing. Seriously though, why the hell are so many bronies misanthropes? It's like they think the show's about telling us that we're a lot of filthy monkey monsters who should go die in a hole because we can't ever embrace friendship or do any good and have no reason to exist. God, I fucking hate those people, it's like they've been reading so much Neichze that they can't understand the beauty of our duality and contradictions and they should read some Ayn Rand and realize that people are so wonderful and that ponies just make add to it and classic Blue Beetle #5 features a misanthropic villain who hates people and The Question is the best superhero and----------------

Sorry, I went a bit overboard with that. Yes, Option one is perfect.

Option one please, it sounds like such a great take on the Hie genre.

D48

I think option 1 sounds the most new and interesting. We already have plenty of strong examples of sci-fi in Equestria, but having a unique human culture already living there would make things interesting. You have an entire culture with its own unique magic system and technology level to play with (humans are very much evolutionary tool users so they will have some form of technology). You also get some help from having them already living there because it makes it easy to have some scraps of legends floating around for ponies like Lyra to have heard about, and you can also heavily slant those legends or leave them with contradictory fragments to add another layer of confusion to things.

I would personally say option 1. However, option three sounds interesting even though I know nothing about firefly. Option 2 has been done quite often or something close to it so I personally can't say yes to another one. *shrugs* Just go wit whatever you want.

At first I was all "Sci-fi all the way!", but then I re-read option one.
Option 1 all the way!!! I want nothing more than to see a human and a unicorn have a good old fashioned magic duel!
+100 awesome points if the unicorn is Trixie.

Big fan of option 1, seeing as there isn't a well done human with magic fic (other than the dresden files) here on fimfiction...but also a big fan of sci fi, option 2 seems awesome.

If anyone could pull off option three, it would probably be you, my good sir.

The first two both sound great, but option 1 is the best in my opinion.

I think option 1 sounds the most promising, but I do have a question about option 3. Would the pony crew be based on the characters from Firefly, or would they still be themselves but in a Firefly themed pony-verse?

It will not feature the 'humans are the real monsters' trope nor genocide at the hooves of the ponies. It's an adventure fic not a dark one.

The fact you even need to say that is the biggest disappointment of the brony fandom since Cupcakes.

I say Option 2, because you seem like the kind of author who wouldn't screw that premise up.

I would like to see options one and two, but I can't decide.

¿Porque no a las dos?

Personally, I would like to see both 1 and 2.

I have problems with all 3 of these premises.'

#1: The story seems promising, but the representation kind of defeats the purpose of using humans to begin with.

#2: Seen it before, but I do like it. However, the trope that bugs me is not the military vs scientist ratio, it's the "accidental discovery". The odds of accidentally discovering Equestria's world that way are ASTRONOMICAL. Either the humans knew they were there already and went looking for them, or the humans were brought there intentionally. Perhaps the princesses shielded the world from outside encounters, but they decide to help a ship in distress or something.

#3: the 3rd one I have NO interest in at all because of this:

but really I'd like to explore the characters of the mane six after growing up in that 'verse.

If they grew up in that 'verse, they would no longer be the same characters, period.
You would be using 6 OCs with the names and appearances of the mane 6.

Now if you combined all 3 that would be cool.
Something involving the events of the first premise (backstory and independent mythos created) brought the Serenity to Equestria (sci-fi + crossover and non military vessel with interesting characters) after which a select group of ponies leave with the Serenity crew who chose not to stay to have other adventures (crossover without adaptation). Why? Some outrageous premise maybe... perhaps something the Equestrian humans did ponified the entire human race?

Option 1.

407204
Because in a pastel world, gray areas are hard to see? Because humans have great potential for good and evil?
Have a happy video:

Personally I do not like the first option, personally because I dislike the "Humans in Equestria" idea without a reasonable in story explanation other than they were here to begin with.

Option 2 is nice and I do like Arrow 18 Mission Log
simply because the author has made it more than just.

"Hello I am a human from another world."

"Oh hello my name is Twilight Sparkle."

"Wow isn't it nice we speak the same language and have no barriers to overcome.":twilightsheepish:

Option 3 would be my number one choose simply because I love how you made the cross over work for Dresden Files and MLP and Firefly is one of my top SciFi favorites.

Whichever you do choose I am sure it will be amazing though so please keep up the awesome work.:rainbowkiss:

I only read option 3.... If you did that, I would love you forever.

Firefly for life!

Actually, here's an idea based on 407364 's comment.

Do that. dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/misc_Lyra_smile.png

Option 2 or 3. I'm assuming that there would be at least a small group of military in that ship, in case of hostile aliens, though it would be mostly scientists.

407364

Some outrageous premise maybe... perhaps something the Equestrian humans did ponified the entire human race?

The Reaver virus. If failed research lead to it, perhaps another project almost succeeded in bringing about the desired results (slight mutation problems):pinkiecrazy: .

407458

All it needed was a little magic.

I've always loved seeing my favorite authors taking a shot at HiE fics, so I'd say option 1. But Option 2 is fine too.
But mostly number 1 is what I'd like to see. :3

1 or 2

i think option one sounds the most intriguing.

I am loving all three ideas. I think that you could really make them all very enjoyable to read at a high quality.

I would have to say option...

2 because I want to see how you will pull it off.

Both options 1 & 3 sound the most interesting. I say do option 1 first as a kind of break after finishing Dresden Fillies then start working on option 3.

Option 1.

Funny, I'm already working on a story that combines options 2 and 3, kind of. It's a firefly/serenity x MLP story, and first contact was made by a scientist ship crash landing in Equestria. What are the odds, huh?

option 2 with the crash being badlands, changlings with the power of SCIENCE!

Option 1 is best option.:pinkiehappy:

My vote would be for option 2.

Normally I'd select 3, but the characters and following that show has accrued lead to the potential of a lot of inferno-posts about "not getting it right.
Granted, with your track record, if you feel you have a good handle on the universe, characters, and can deliver an immersive story, feel free to count me as an option 3. :)
