Inventing a new Brony Convention... · 7:27pm May 3rd, 2017

I need some help. I'm calling it Dashville, because it's in Asheville, where I live. Any tips and tricks for setting up the con? Dates? Ways to lure entice my fellow bronies? Ways to reach out to people who live in Asheville, NC? If you live in Asheville, please tell me!

4518746 North Carolina... I said NC for a reason.

I've never been to any conventions, at all. But I do know a few things about requirements. First off, you're going to need to find a location with a lot of space to rent a cut off from the general public, you probably don't want uninterested people wandering in. Two, having activities and merchandise for convention goers to engage in and consume is always a good idea. Three, get word out however you can. A good start is scheduling the time of the con around however long the location you rented out is allowing you to use the space. Hope some of that helps.

I'm a loner who's a social outcast most of the time, so I've never been to a convention. And I have never set one up, so I can't help you there. Sorry about that. And I pretty much live on the complete opposite side of the US (I live in central Utah), so I probably won't be able to go to that one.

First off, find an old gray haired fan and ask them. All new fandoms want to reinvent the wheel (after 7 seasons, Bronies still count as a new fandom - old style fans still look at Bronycon and shake there heads - "WorldCon has been doing this better for 90 years!" What is "this"...? Sorry, I don't really know, convention organization is the area where I loose most of my SMOF points (if you don't know what SMOF points are, that's why you need to consult an old gray haired generic SF fan).

What I can tell you with certainty - don't blow your whole budget on pro-guests. Find good fanish content providers; fanfic writers, cosplayers, animators, musicians, etc; and respect them and promote the hell out of them and make them the core of your programming. The closer to local they are the better.

4518924 Thank you, that's really good advice.

Oh, it would help if you mentioned dates. Your con wouldn't happen to be after Labor Day and before Spring, would it?

4518930 I don't know what date it should be... but I want it to be in summer... because my birthday's on July 12th.

4518935 My personal busy season, I can't help you directly (Oh, well, it's not like I had any horse fame to offer you). But I know that Asheville has a pretty good fanish community. Reach out, particularly to cosplayers - they're the ones that attract local press. Use your google-fu to find local resources.

Speaking of google-fu, once you have a venue and a clue you'll want a Facebook page and a Twitter account, and you'll want to to let EQD's convention page have links to both. Such social medial is the one area where the old gray haired fan won't be much help - but find someone who can keep these updated.

Try not to schedule opposite the anime convention.

East Coast. Good public transportation systems, everything is a lot closer together than it is out here in the West. Should be easy to get a good amount of people there.

Advertisement is a huge thing. But so is having things to do.

4519046 North Carolina is on the east coast, but Asheville is on the west side of the state.

Still an east coast state :P

That's at the base of the Appalachian Mountains, right?

4519413 Kinda. If by "base" you mean about halfway up them in parts, and the bottom in other parts.
