Doctor Perseus Reviews: MLP S7E3 "A Flurry of Emotions" · 2:45am Apr 28th, 2017
Sorry for the late review. I'm slowing getting back into the grove. Anyway, here's my thoughts on the third episode of Season 7.
It's odd how, despite being the focus of the Season 6 premiere, we've hardly seen any of Flurry Heart up to this point. Now, of course, she is a baby after all so it's not like she could really be the focus of an episode all her own. Unless they want to do a Rugrats-esque episode with her, Pumpkin Cake, and Pound Cake. Well, either way, we finally have her taking the spotlight (sort of) in this Twilight-centered episode. And what's my verdict? ...It was okay.
First off, as always, Twilight and Spike are great together. It's always a plus when they share the spotlight together. I think this episode does somewhat show how Twilight has changed over these past seven seasons. While she's still an excellent planner, it seems a lot more obvious nowadays how Twilight can let her plans go awry. Now, granted, this isn't really so much due to her lack of planning expertise but rather her trying to juggle two difficult jobs at once: focusing on entertaining a group of sick fillies and being the BEST AUNT EVAH! In trying to do both, she ends up flunking at both. But only temporarily. She learns to be a better aunt and Spike gets to entertain the fillies. So, happy ending for all.
I will say that it's nice to see a bit more of Flurry Heart. Granted, she's yet to develop any real personality outside of "cute baby". But, unless you're dealing with series about three-dimensional infant characters, it's a bit much to expect babies in shows to have fully fleshed out characters. She's there for some cute and funny moments. Nothing more. Nothing less. If anything, it's at least interesting to see how her magic has developed since her birth. While it's certainly more under control, it's definitely pretty powerful. Enough to temporarily confuse the Element of Magic herself at least.
I'll add that I also enjoyed the bits with Shining Armor and Cadance. Thinking back, I think we've rarely seen these two have some alone time. Either they're apart or they're sharing the spotlight with another character (mostly Twilight). So just seeing the two of them on their own in a slice of life setting was actually kind of refreshing.
But, overall, there's nothing really mind-blowing about this episode. It's certainly not horrible but there's also not much to write home about IMO.
So what did you think of A Flurry of Emotions?
As with the previous three seasons, the 3rd episode of this season is written by some new writers. In this case, we got Sammie Crowley and Whitney Wetta. These two are similar to Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco in that they've written episodes together for "The Loud House" on Nickelodeon. So far, they've written 10 episodes for that show: Sleuth or Consequences, Toads and Tiaras, April Fools Rules, Lincoln Loud: Girl Guru, A Tattler's Tale, Snow Bored, 11 Louds a Leapin' (w/ Kevin Sullivan), Suite and Sour, Cheater by the Dozen, & Kick the Bucket List.
I think, Flurry has a great character for a baby. While she obviously isnt as smart as an adult yet, she has shown a great understanding of her surroundings and problemsolving abilities, especially in the sugarcube corner scene, moreso than usual for babies. in the baby cakes episode pound and pumpkin didnt really do anything, but respond to their surroundings (except in the end when they cheered up pinkie), which basically meant crying, whenever they didnt like something, untill someone else makes it go away. Flurry on the other hand, noticed "hm, i dont like that, what can i do to make it better". It didnt always have the effect she hoped for, but still.
So Doctor Perseus, which babysitting episode do you like more? This or "Baby Cakes" from Season 2?
I don't know if you read my review of this episode, but I liked it as well. I especially enjoyed the focus on Shining Armor and Cadance as like you said it was refreshing.
