Hey guys, your local neighborhood Latias/Mod here.
So it's that time of the year when money flies out the window and we fall trap to the capitalist and marketing demons of our time, who exploit our faith/seasonal feelings/family issues in addition to some half-made up traditions stemming from the past 50 years so and presented as ancient.
And yet. And yet... when you have family... a kid... parents and siblings in other countries, friends that care, other families that take you in... that's when the cynical becomes irrelevant and the actual joy of these days comes in fully. Regardless of what you think originated all of this, there is a true rewarding feeling to have people welcome you into their home and family, sit you down for a dinner with every member there afterwards opening presents one by one so that everyone can appreciate them (and surprising you and your kid with presents of your own).
It's cliched, a little, to say that xmas is less about everything else and more about family. But it is. Religion might play a big part for some, but in the end the point is to not celebrate it on your own (even if I have had some lonesome ones). It's supposed to be shared with others, maybe within immediate surroundings, and sometimes far away, and yet thinking of you and you of them.
Sure, presents are very cool, and I'll be the first to admit that when my little 6 yo opens his up and his face light's up with surprise and wonder, it's amazing... but never forget the warmth of those around you. Look back on years past and remember your family gatherings. Maybe it's not perfect, maybe you had an uncle you didn't like much or a cousin you competed with all the time... but sitting down for dinner together and just being there after in a room surrounded of people that care? That is what this is all about.
So, yeah... merry xmas.

I just get weirded out every year by the lack of traffic on the roads.
