One year. It’s unbelievable, but I already spent one full year on this site reading fanfictions about rainbow-horses. And what better way to celebrate my one-year-anniversary than making a top ten countdown about the fanfics I read in the past year. Why? Because I like top tens.
Rules: Obviously only fanfics I read and only “completed” stories (because “uncompleted” stories are still able to mess up). Please keep in mind this here is completely subjective and I haven’t read everything on this site (that’s impossible). Actually my “read it later” is currently at 3 weeks and 3 days.

Magic, and Mayhem, and... Murder? Oh my... by Invictus
And I start the list with one of the weirder stories I read. Basically Shawn Spencer, protagonist of the crime/comedy-series Psych (if you don’t know it, go watch it), suddenly lands in Equestria while chasing a criminal. While searching a way back home with the ponies, he also helps them to hunt down the criminal he chased there and gets roped in a huge conspiracy. The best part is that the author perfectly nailed Shawn’s personality. He annoys everypony around him, shouts non-stop pop-culture references but still manages to solve the crimes.

And here we have a hangover story with ponies. So yeah, the mane six spend the night with too much cider and are now faced with the aftermath. In her drunken state Rarity tried to get revenge on Blueblood, who promises to not make it public, if she pretends to be his marefriend. Fluttershy and Rainbow confessed their love for each other and are now in a relationship (but a certain rabbit disagrees). And the main plot of course: Twilight and Applejack somehow managed to marry each other while drunk. Fully official and with magic rings, that force them to stay close together. So they are searching all of Equestria for the one who married them. This is of course only a simple summary for a pretty ridiculous story (which made me ship Twijack).

Fractured Sunlight by Oroboro
When Twilight was a little girl, her best friend, Sunset Shimmer, died in a terrible accident. Years later she finally managed to move on and now plans to investigate strange happenings at CHS. Here she meets a girl that shouldn’t exist, who will turn not only her world view around.
Man, that was poetic. But it really is an interesting take on human Twilight, which the movies never could take. And believe me, it will get dramatic and emotional. And the artworks for each chapter are a nice extra.

Twilight Sparkle Gets A Free Salad by AestheticB
Twilight wants a salad. And when she discovers a flaw in the fast food system, Twilight tries to exploit this to get a free one. Though she didn’t expect it to involve secret government agents, skin-tight spymare-catsuits, epic battles and Drakbog, king of frogs.
This story is just weird, crazy and hilarious. Not much more to say.

Long Road to Friendship by Albinocorn
I have a Sunset bookshelf, so of course Albinocorn would be here. It starts with an alternate take on the ending of EqG, where Sunset does not get a sudden, unbelievable reformation and instead refuses to learn her lesson, which is why the elements curse her to not only always tell the truth, but also to always do what others ask her to do, until she learns friendship. Now add the humane five, a new student who turns out to be the human-version of Twilight, a crazy magician and a talking toy and you get a great story about the character growth of Sunset Shimmer. And the sequel recently started, too.

After the Friendship Games Sunset invites Twilight to her home for a sleepover. That’s all.
And no, it doesn’t include any romance or shipping.
This short story showed me that fanfictions aren’t only about romance or shipping, as this here is just about Sunset being a great friend to Sci-Twi.

What if Twilight is actually a changeling? What if she even is the daughter of Queen Chrysalis? What if the invasion of Canterlot was just a trick to find Twilight? Yes, yes and yes for this story. Here Chrysalis is actually a kind and friendly ruler, who left her daughter Twilight with the Sparkles to ensure her survival. Of course such a truth is very hard to accept, not only for Twilight herself. And that was only the beginning, because Chrysalis’ hive is not the only one. I started to follow this pretty early and enjoyed every chapter. And I’m really looking forward to the sequel.

And here we have another one of my first fimfics. And it even includes one of my favourite headcanons. Oh, and also Albinocorn again. The story is simple. Sunset Shimmer visits Equestria to reconcile with her family. Easier said than done as time flows different between the two world so that she was missing for ten years. And the first meeting between Sunset and Spitfire goes completely wrong. Oh, didn’t I mention it. Aforementioned headcanon is that Spitfire and Sunset are sisters. And Sunset is literally the last pony Spitfire wants to see. I also love the unique take on how Sunset became evil as it focuses on the rivalry between the siblings.

Veil of Thoughts and Fragments of Memories by Starwin
Eeyup, I’m counting these two together. Where should I start with these? So… for some reason Twilight and Rainbow have fused together. Especially concerning as this is forbidden magic, because separation always ended in the death of at least one. While their friends try to understand why Twilight would do this, Twilight Dash is struggling with her own mind and identity. The sequel builds on this as everyone is trying to adapt to this new situation as well as dealing with the aftermath of a few things that happened in the first story. And why does Twilight Dash suddenly have so much problems remembering.
These stories were the reason why I finally made an account. After finishing the first I even managed to binge read the second in one day (Halloween 2015). Or maybe I’m overrating them due to nostalgia. It works for the Sonic-games.
Honorable mentions:
The Evening Sonata by Daniel-Gleebits
Sunset finds a homeless Sonata and decides to help her, which soon leads to them becoming great friends. The romance only takes a backseat and the story more focuses on the redemption of the sirens.
Twilight VS Anime by Lupine Infernis
Take a bunch of anime tropes and throw them at a logic-focused character like Twilight Sparkle to see what happens. That’s at least what Discord and the rest of Equestria do.
The Other Side of the Horizon by Rambling Writer
Twilight travels with Spike, Applejack and Zecora to Gondwana to become friends with the zebras, but the wild creatures aren’t the only threat when they uncover a huge conspiracy.

Sunset of Time by Albinocorn
After the first two it probably was pretty obvious I’d finish the Albinocorn trinity. I can’t help but loving this beautiful story. It just has everything I want in a story, action, adventure, drama and comedy in the right places and epic plot-twists.
Right, the story. It starts in the future, where Sunset Shimmer is the student of Twilight and is forced to watch how a big darkness kills Twilight and destroys Canterlot. With her dying breath Twilight tells Sunset to travel back in time to stop something called the “dark regalia”. Of course the plot gets a bit (much) more complicated (I already mentioned plot-twists). The characters’ personalities are all perfectly nailed, even Sunset, despite being written before the EQG-movies. It even includes my favourite quote in (fan)fiction. Hidden behind spoiler tags, because spoilers.

Her voice broke again, and she looked away to swipe at her eyes. When she looked back at Sunset, she was smiling her sad smile again. “There’s also… one more reason why it had to be you. Why you had to come back to this particular time. It’s… a selfish reason, one that might cause me heartache later on but…”
Even in her holographic form, Sunset could see Twilight’s eyes sparkling. “I wanted to remember you.”
And I admit, it’s the only (written) story so far, that made me cry (twice). But this story was worth it.
