Swap out the ponies with humans (or any "intelligent" creatures), replace the locations with original ones, then publish it. No one would notice that it's a modified fanfiction and it would probably get into some bestseller lists too.

Eh, looking back on it now, I don't even think it's one of my best stories. One of the most popular, yes, but not one of the best.
A lot of the characters were overblown two-dimensional caricatures, there were some pretty major plot holes, and some of the plot is forced.
I like to think I've learned and improved in the last 3 years.

Some of those are as popular as they deserve, some aren't... But if there's one thing that I've learned on Fimfic, it's that the things that make a story popular and the things that make a story good may overlap in places, but they're not the same things.

Now you're tempting me to read the story again..... I didn't notice any of such things and I'm sure I wouldn't see any now.
And overall, the term "forced" gets thrown around too much. It's entirely of subjective nature if something in a story feels forced to someone or not.
It often really depends on it if a reader understood what you wanted to do or accomplish with a certain scene, so don't take it too seriously if someone tells you something in one of your stories is forced.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't learn, but that you should approach criticism with care. As you said, a popular story and a good story aren't the same thing.
And considering that "One In A Million" made it on EQD, whose pre-readers have such high standards that they would make every publisher blush, I'd say there is a lot of truth to what I said about your story.
And I'm going to read all of these stories you linked me..... One day. *cough*
