Anyone here know Warhammer 40K or Dawn of War? · 12:03am Oct 4th, 2016

In a funny coincidence I'll be referencing Warhammer 40K twice in the next week or so in my stories, one in a long overdue reference I've been planning to do for about a year but haven't gotten to in We Remember Everything, and one more meaningful one in Equestria Was Merely a Setback.

The more meaningful of the two is Avitus from Dawn of War II, a devastator marine whose firepower is as great as his unending fury. In World of Warcraft there is an ability for Hunters called "Barrage" which is basically a hail of gunfire sent forth to damage all enemies in sight in front of you. In most cases the ability to do something doesn't match the weapons being used (bows and primitive rifles), so to have a character demonstrate this defining ability of the class I needed someone who would use something...different. While player characters don't get access to heavy machine guns, all sorts of mechanical contraptions exist in Warcraft with the aid of magic, so the ending result is the following:

Hell, reverse his color scheme and you have the Scarlet Crusade.

Also, while not something that really comes across in reading, Avitus also has a great voice that I wish I could somehow convey.

If anyone is familiar with either Warhammer or its spinoff games, let me know, since I don't personally know many others who really are into either. And if one is familiar with Dawn of War, they will also perhaps notice that I have another reason to use Avitus.

Sincerely,
Alpharius

I only know Dawn of War because I got it during a Steam Sale so my knowledge is sparse at best but my god that video, hilarious. I'd have to agree with you on that voice though, it's so good.

Anyone here know Warhammer 40K

A better question to ask is: who doesnt?

4239109 Here is a bigger sampling of Avitus and his voice:

He's one of the main people from Dawn of War 2, but I highly recommend the game and its following expansion "Chaos Rising". Some of the best RTS games I've played, with a good and challenging campaign that has great characters in it (of which, I would say Avitus is the best). His deep cynicism and eternal hatred of just about everything is a reflection of the setting he finds himself in, a grim universe where there is only war. He knows the universe he is in and resents it, not possessing the belief in larger causes or just basic hope that keep others from despair in said universe. Unlike them, he sees it for what it is and he doesn't pretend that their lives have any more meaning or purpose than what they do.

Ally: No man died in His service that died in vain.

Avitus: Spare us your empty platitudes! It matters not who lives and dies! Blood is shed as it has always been. There is nothing else in this forsaken existence!

Warhammer is a grim universe, but Warcraft isn't too much better (it just likes to pretend otherwise with more direct humor rather than ironic humor). So it will be interesting having him join us, though on the side of our antagonists.

4239116 I mean, a fair amount of people don't :rainbowlaugh: So, you know our boy Avitus here?

4239177
Yes indeed. Squad Leader of a Blood Ravens devestator squad in DOW2.

Will this be the actual Avitus crossed over, or merely a local copy of his personality?

When you say dawn of war do you mean classic dawn of war (RTS) up to Soulstorm, or dawn of war two onwards.

4239440 I think a local copy of the personality...as in a guy named Avitus who does as Avitus does, but isn't a Space Marine. His role in Chaos Rising particularly will be important to this version.

4239444 Both in a manner of speaking: Avitus is from DOW2, but technically was a part of DOW1 since he took part in one of the campaigns (at least), he just wasn't a playable character. So mostly DOW2, but technically the character branches backward into DOW1 in a way important to their actions in DOW2.

While I may quite well versed in 40k, I can't say I have ever actually played any of the DOW games. I do play the table top however. I think mastermenthe may be right with asking if anyone here doesn't know anything about 40k/DoW.

4239892 You'd be surprised. The people who are responding to this journal are people who have an interest in responding to a journal about Warhammer, but plenty of people don't know the series, so I was curious if anyone following me were aware of it. It's a niche series, and not even everyone who knows about or plays it knows everything about it...case and point, you know Warhammer but haven't played Dawn of War.

I miss playing the tabletop game, but it's too expensive to get back into for me at the moment.

4239906

Well, I do suppose you do have a point there.

It's expensive, this is true. and sadly, it seems as if GW has decided to go with giant sized miniatures as the new order of the day. Eh, wish I could of played fantasy while it was still around.

4240729 GW loves making everything way more expensive than it should be...having worked with 3D printers and knowing the associated cost of making small things, they could honestly sell their stuff for a fraction of what they do on the materials angle, perhaps a bit more due to license and quality, but still the point remains that they overprice everything and now are releasing all these giant models that cost a week's paycheck that are so powerful.

How did i miss this? Well in case there was any doubt, i myself live partially through 40k.

4239116 a very large amount of people actually.

4302835 Then you should look forward to when I finally finish the Gaiden chapter with Alpharius, and also how Avitus is a now recurring antagonist in Setback! :rainbowlaugh:

"Faith is a lie! Truth is a lie!"

I'm actually currently playing through Dawn of War 2 now with one of the readers from Setback, so this'll be interesting :rainbowlaugh:

4302879 aww. I don't have DOW. Although... If are going to the LVO in February that would be neat.

4302888 LVO?

Also, Dawn of War is constantly put on sale all the time, so if you keep your eye out you could buy the whole thing for like 5 dollars like I did. Like eight games, five dollars. Not bad. Probably won't see a deal that good in the future, but the point still stands that they do put it on sale all the time.

4302893
Las Vegas Open. Google it.

And my computer is shit. Also, if you have DOW II, might I recommend Elite Mod.

4302895 Yeah, the only Las Vegas I have any contact with is what I see on TV.

4302899 That's a shame. I go every New Years with my family, always something to do and have fun.

4302900 My collection also got destroyed in a storm, so don't have an army to play with. Only models I got left these days are Gundam models and a couple Tau I sculpted to look like Gundams.

4302905 ooh, ouch. My DA, BA, AM, and nids all remain too notch. To loose all that time and resources would hurt I imagine.

4302908 Yeah, it kind of killed the hobby for me in a way, especially since I lost my fifty or so Warhammer books along with said collection so it was a total party kill.

This being said, making my Gundam models has helped get me back into the craft...I just don't really miss working on stuff one fiftieth the size of what I'm currently doing. Fine with small parts and stuff, but the problem with miniatures is that, well, they're mini. If Barnes and Nobles starts selling Warhammer miniatures though I'll pick some of them up, but for now I'm enjoying slowly burning a giant gift card on giant robots since I have a slew of books to read already and keep getting B&N cards faster than I can use them...worse problems to have, of course, but it is kind of irritating to be drowned in them.
