Doctor Perseus Reviews: MLP S6E21 "Every Little Thing She Does" *SPOILERS* · 2:45am Sep 27th, 2016
Yet again, sorry for another late review. So let's just cut to the chase: I really liked this episode!
Starlight hasn't appeared as much as I would have liked this season. Her development's been great and her appearances have been welcome but if feels like she's forgotten until the plot directly involves her. Granted, The Times They Are A Changeling wasn't centered on her so I suppose that was the exception to the rule. I'm starting to really hope that we get a Season 7 next year to pair up with the movie. If anything, to give us more time with Starlight.
Anyway, it was great seeing just how far Starlight has come with her magical abilities. Though I think it's fair to say that she and Twilight are slightly OP at this point. Given what we've heard about the finale, I'm surprised she'd need any help at all with anything. Especially now that she's invented a powerful brainwashing spell. I imagine that our future finale and premiere villains will have to be incredibly powerful in order to go up against Starlight's and Twilight's magic. Still, despite the OP nature, it was nice seeing Starlight learning with Twilight. Come to think of it, another downside from not seeing Starlight as much is that we haven't really gotten to see much of Twilight being the Celestia to Starlight's Twilight outside of a few instances. Again, I pray for a Season 7. But, still, what we've seen of teacher Twilight has been rather enjoyable and I liked her interactions with Starlight in this episode. Also, while Spike wasn't the focus he also got some good lines and good moments with Twilight and Starlight. The three of them have formed a very nice family unit in the castle.
The rest of the Mane 6 got some very fun moments as well, even though they spent most of the episode brainwashed. Pinkie had some fun new expressions, Fluttershy creeped everyone out by collecting spiders (at this point, Fluttershy is becoming the Hagrid of MLP), and Applejack gave a very unexpected yet welcome Spider-Man reference. Not much to say about Rarity and Rainbow Dash though. Rainbow Dash did get a funny moment at the end when she helped Starlight and everypony else "chillax". Rarity...just felt kind of there for the entire episode.
So, overall, I really liked this one. It may not have been as funny or jaw-dropping as some of MLP's greater entries but I found this to be a very interesting and entertaining Starlight-centric episode.
What did the rest of you think of this episode?
Don't forget, The Times They Are A Changeling isn't the only episode this season not centered around Starlight that she's appeared in. She also had that brief, non-speaking cameo at the beginning of Spice Up Your Life. No doubt Starlight will be absent for the next 3 episodes just before the season finale.
I know I already brought this up on your home page, but this bares repeating. Starlight's minimal appearances in Season 6 have recently led me to believe that she isn't really a Seventh Ranger to the Mane 6 and that her overall role in this season is just part of some story arc which will end with her leaving the Mane Cast. Seriously, I would be more surprised if she ends up staying than if she leaves once this possible story arc is done and over with.
I thought it was terrible, and a prime example of what's wrong with Season 6 as a whole. The dramatic and comedic timing of the ep is crap, especially the ending montage. There's not a single original thing from beginning to end- it's all been done before, and usually better. It's basically a poor remake of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" dumbed down for the tiny tots. The show didn't used to be this didactic...

We'll just have to see how the finale plays out then.
I also enjoyed this episode quite a bit. I go all into it in my own review.
Funny that you should mention Harry Potter. I noticed quite a few Harry Potter-esque things about this episode.
Actually, pretty much every story Applejack tells in this episode is a reference to something or other.
I actually felt Rainbow Dash was more kind of there for the episode. Rarity was at least making that dress you know.
I don't know if you've seen Eli "The Cartoon Hero" Stone's Season 6 Reaction video, but he was not very fond of this episode. Not only is it his least favorite episode of Season 6, but it also dethroned The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well as his least favorite episode of the entire series. As he explained: "Mare-Do-Well, for how horribly it botched it up, at least had good intentions. In retrospect, I could see what they were going for." As for this episode, his problems with it boil down to three major reasons:
1. Starlight using magic to brainwash the Mane 5 right from the get-go, unlike Twilight in Lesson Zero who only resorted to using a similar tactic with the "Want it, Need it" spell after she snapped from worrying too much.
2. The Mane Five's brainwashed states being played for comedy when in reality their free wills are being taken away from them, using The Dresden Files as an example of why such a concept is wrong in the first place.
3. Starlight not getting proper punishment for her actions, even referring to it as the second most evil thing she's ever done and claiming that Sunset Shimmer was punished more than her, outside of being scolded.

I've seen it and I completely understand his reasons. I still like this episode though. But I can definitely understand why others may hate it and why it's his least favorite episode now.
