Day 10: Of Natural and Magical Hybrids, Part 1 · 4:34pm Sep 10th, 2016

It’s largely aware that authors like you and I have seen fan pictures and fan fictions involving cross species individuals living in Equestria or somewhere else. Well, such beings exist in the Jongojiverse as well. Today, we cover those of a natural birth from Ponykind, other equids of the same genus such as Horses Proper and Zebras, and the sole surviving additional genus Hipparion.

Between Ponykind: Evolving from a common ancestor, Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi are capable of successful interbreeding and produce healthy children. As in humans, which feature a child inherits is largely up to their parent. For example, a purebred Pegasus and a heterozygous Unicorn would have a Pegasus as their first child and three heterozygous Pegasi later on, with very little chance that one of the calculated children would be a Unicorn. Often, Ponies with heterozygous traits are common. Should an extinction event occur in the next few million years, isolated pockets that contain dominantly purebred individuals, yet have enough of a population to maintain genetic diversity, they would eventually form different genera.

Contrary to popular belief, even if they are a different shape, Alicorns can produce children. The reason they don’t is largely out of fear. Flurry Heart proves that a child Alicorn in a modern society can be very dangerous, it was lucky that Sunburst was able to stabilize her power. Then comes the issue of when the child would grow up. Alicorns both pure and artificial (those made into Alicorns such as Cadance and Twilight) are very long lived and would be very unlikely to give up their position of power until they absolutely have to. As Celestia said to Sunset, “Being a Princess must be earned.”

On Day 9 of the Blogathon, I mentioned Ponies and Horses being a separate species altogether. But as Ponies are descended from a band of possible island dwelling Horses, they can produce children. However, the gender of the Horse determines the success of both parents; a Horse mare and a Pony stallion are capable to breeding and producing children without much consequence. But in the opposite direction, there is a high chance that a Pony mare will die after childbirth. But for the children of such pairings, this is the result of individuals who are in the middle range of height between Pony and Horse such as Fleur de Lis and Cheese Sandwich.

As in our world, breeding a Pony or a Horse with a Donkey produces a Mule. There are documented cases of Zorses, a Zebra/Horse hybrid. And like our world, very few individuals are fertile.

Hipparion interbreeding with those in the genus Equus is extremely chancy. The only individual living among them is Cosgrove while his entire kind is far north near the Arctic Circle. What would happen if he was to have a family of his own? His human counterpart would have no trouble aside from the probability his children might inherit his condition. But what about the Equestrian? There are documented cases of two closely related genera, namely for example both elephant genera breeding in zoos and producing a calf. Even then, the calf passed away after a few weeks due to immune deficiency. It’s more likely that the prospective child would be stillborn.

Tomorrow’s blog post will be in light of those who lost their lives in the attacks on 9/11.
