Well, that was certainly a thing. (Very minor spoilers if they can be counted as such.)
I have yet to see a really good D&D-centered episode in any cartoon so far, and the "inside the game" trope is done constantly for these sort of episodes. I'm not complaining too much though, I think, overall it was an entertaining episode that captured the essence of RPGs to some extent and I think the best part was RD and Pinkie jumping in to play as well. Considering that Hasbro owns Wizards of the Coast, I was hoping for something a bit more involved, but for what it is, it's cool.
Still, I like my version better.
Anyway, to commemorate this episode, I leave you with...
Meh, the Changling one was still my favorite.
I'm watching a whole set of 80s intro. The nostalgia hits hard!
A Wizards of the Coast IP, yes. Card games, yes. Just not both at the same time. I swear, they're teasing me.
But yeah, fun episode, even if Spike is an unwelcoming DM. (If the player's first impulse is to cast a spell, help him build a spellcaster.)
That unicorn in the intro was kinda adorable. Also, it kinda reminded me of a goat.
4175237 Well, let's give him a break, he's only been DMing himself and Big "The Dialogue" Mac so far.
The only thing that I felt was missing from the episode was Shining Armor, I mean the guy was an established O&O nerd. I also felt like the whole "bring the gang into the game" scene could have been a bit longer but hey, they did what they could. As for the Squizard, the epitome of the Squishy Wizard trope.
4175360 Sadly Shining would be too much of a thing, given that he'd had to abandon the Empire for a D&D game.
I agree that it was interesting when RD said essentially what the heck and entered the playfield. Pinkie will play ANY game. Twilight, Rarity, and AJ -> Prudes.
This episode had so many nice little moments.

I can't fault Discord in this episode. Spike and Mac COULD have given Discord's Wild Ride a chance at least. It isn't like the game was going to go away. BUT they didn't.
They could have noticed just how far they were pushing Discord.
They could have played along in the game world in the first place, or at least been a bit more creative. Cmon Spike -- teleport. You have a level 30 wizard. You'd be embarrassed over your character's actions if it were in a game.
Then there was the game itself which seemed to be utterly MEAN with the way it treated failure. Yes, it wasn't deadly but sheesh -- this is a friendship world...
----
Then we had unicorn Big Mac -- again.
And the Yak conference...
They seem to be edging into the territory of several of my stories.
4175199 Been there, done that
4175365 ...True.
Dude. DUDE. You posted that?
Come on now! :P
Can I just say that Big Mac's armor is fucking awesome
It was alright, but it was no D & Dee Dee.
I thought Gravity Falls did a fantastic D&D episode, though this one was pretty good as well.
