No this was handled much better than MDW. None of the actions were malicious, there was no major damage or psychological trauma, and the moral wasn't THAT misconstrued either. Although I thought it would be better to go "If you can't take a joke, don't be doing it to others."
Although after seeing the title, I thought it would be another MDW too.
If we are to look at this episode as Mare Do Well revisited, this is a slight improvement. It addresses some of the issues MDW had. They actually TALK to Rainbow this time before exploring other options. That was something that MDW lacked and one big reason I hated it.
Unfortunately, what brings down this episode the most is Rainbow Dash herself. This episode is the reason why I consider her the most inconsistent character on the show in terms of how she's written. Unfortunately, she's full on b**ch mode in this episode. Some of her pranks aren't too bad like the Spike one or even the Rarity one. However, most of them you have to question if she's sick or not. I mean skunk for a wig, putting a boulder in Big Mac's cart. A brick in Mr. Cake's sandwich? What kind of pranks are these? Even at the end, I don't think Rainbow learned anything. It's not helped that immediately after the whole thing that Rainbow just pretends like nothing really happened and vows to go back to pranking.
While it's slightly better than MDW, it still has its problems. Hard to say if this episode is worse than Newbie Dash, but it's up there.
However, most of them you have to question if she's sick or not. I mean skunk for a wig, putting a boulder in Big Mac's cart. A brick in Mr. Cake's sandwich? What kind of pranks are these?
Did you suddenly forget you're watching a cartoon or something?
Fun episode, and handled a lot better than "Mysterious Mare Do Well".
Though... I was kinda hoping that at the end, Rainbow would've been like, "Wow, that prank was awesome! You got me good!" and completely miss the point they were trying to make.
This episode loses out of the gate just for the sheer inconsistency of how they treat the pranks. Honestly some of the pranks pulled in "Griffon The Brush Off" back in season 1 were more invasive and damaging than the ones presented here (Her prank on Spike was almost identical, except this one didn't result in him having the hiccups, which is actually an improvement), and Rainbow's plan to color everyone's mouths rainbow colors was actually not a bad prank overall, and didn't even compare to some of the others in both this and "Griffon the Brush Off". Plus the Rarity prank was actually pretty creative and legitimately funny. I don't know how Rarity didn't laugh at that one.
Probably the only one where she went "too far" was pranking Fluttershy, which Pinkie specifically stopped her from doing back in Season 1. The episode's moral could've carried more weight if the pranks had been more severe and careless, and actually escalated upwards toward the end instead of actually starting on the worst one and then slowly petering out to something that doesn't actually hurt anybody in any way. The zombie scenes were cute and fun, but yeah, overall the episode's story just didn't make sense for a fan of the show.
I mean for goodness' sakes, Twilight had a beaker of volatile chemicals explode in her face in "Griffon the Brush Off", and she just smirked when she realized it was a prank. I'm not sure any of the pranks in this episode really come close to being as potentially damaging as that.
It was a little irritating how Rainbow Dash acted, but it is a message I can seriously agree with. We have all these "pranks" which are videos of people being jerks, or radio shows where they basically make people scared or furious, and then act like the entire thing is funny. It's not funny. It's annoying, mean, and I find it all stupid.
Not quite a Mare-Do-Well rehash, but the set up needed to be improved.
4147566 First you've got people complaining when they AREN'T in diapers, and now you're wondering why they still ARE? It seems like the fandom can't decide if they ever want the twins to grow up or not.
I can see why people are comparing this episode to Mysterious Mare-Do-Well. But I feel that this episode handled the resolution better. Granted the build-up to the bit sloppy, but the Zombie Prank made this episode. Overall, not a great episode, but not terrible either.
Yeah. The biggest problem with MDW is the rest of the Mane 6 didn't sit Rainbow down and tell her what they didn't like about her behavior first. That made the whole disguise thing an inappropriate escalation on their part. This time they did, and Rainbow was the one to escalate in response.
So I guess you could call this MDW 2.0 if by that you mean 'the release that fixes the problem with the 1.0 release'.
Rainbow came across as too much of a jerk with her pranks at the beginning, much more so than the previous seasons because this time, she was still unrepentant when just about everyone was telling her to cut that *yay* out.
Some of the zombie scenes were a lot of fun, and I found myself wishing that it was an actual epidemic. I think it would've been a lot more entertaining if they'd played it straight with the zombie apocalypse as a magical mishap.
Even that's not entirely true, though. Their way of telling Rainbow to "stop" was to call her pranks lazy. That was probably the most nonsensical scene of the episode, really. Rainbow wasn't at all out of place to consider that a challenge rather than a command to stop doing it.
>Mysterious Mare Do Well 2.0 NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE.
Just because both episodes are about teaching Rainbow Dash a lesson doesn't mean this one's a rehash of MDW. She's just one of those ponies/people that has to learn the hard way what it feels like on the other end of her pride/a prank. She doesn't learn well from lectures. Youth rarely does.
I took that scene as the conversation getting away from them. They started out making a specific point as a united front. Then Rainbow keeps arguing with them, and they don't have any more plan and just start bickering with her individually. They lose control of the conversation and say the wrong thing in an effort to make their point without a plan.
The fact that they screwed the conversation up doesn't detract from the fact that they tried to handle it without escalation first. In fact, they tried twice! They tried to get Pinkie to talk Rainbow down, and it's only after Pinkie failed and revealed that Rainbow is escalating again that they go nuclear. That's what makes this so much better-handled than MDW.
I just don't like how, "Yeah, Pinkie went over not pranking Fluttershy seasons ago. Imma do it!" I mean when they did prank ponies in "Griffon the Brush Off" Everypony liked it. I just don't like the tone of the episode- but the rest was enjoyable.
Some of Rainbows pranks were pretty mean (really, a brick in Mr. Cake's sandwich?). I have read similar fics on this site (I even wrote a chapter on that involving Trixie).
Though the Baby Cakes getting involved was pretty cute.
Gosh, and I thought last weeks episode was predictable...
As soon as Pinkie Pie was seen 'sick' in bed from Dash's cookie, I'd already got the rest of the episode mapped out in my head... and what a long slog it was getting to the finishing line. Yes, I 'get' the tribute to a certain zombie film of almost the same name, but that doesn't make the end results any less tiresome.
Others faults, like Rainbow pranking Fluttershy at the start when, based on previous episodes, she KNOWS that shouldn't be done, and Pinkie's subsequent amusement upon hearing about it, when she KNOWS it shouldn't be done, pale in comparison to just how yawn-inspiring the second half is, after the basic premise has been established.
Perhaps Megan McCarthy should have written the episode herself, rather than rely on this writer who I've never heard of, who clearly isn't up to the task. The only real laugh I got was Celestia being inundated with messages courtesy of Dash's prank on Spike, I would have LOVED to have seen the princess get her own back on a certain blue pegasus for that bit of malarky.
That at least would have shown some level of inspiration, a quality sorely lacking in all areas of this episode. Not one for the rewatch marathon. 2/5
Agreed. The ridiculous and unjustified escalation is one of the biggest problems that I had with MMDW. We never see them make any attempts to just talk to Rainbow about the problem and Rainbow's actions are never portrayed as particularly dangerous prior to them donning the costume, so them going to the extremes of creating a superhero identity just feels like a complete overreaction. It makes it seem less like they're doing it because RD is causing problems, and more like they're doing it just because they personally find her actions annoying, despite the fact that she's not doing anything that's actually directly affecting them.
Even if the conversation gets out of hand, the fact that they actually try to talk with Rainbow about why the things she's doing are bothering them - only for RD to disregard it and keep doing what she's doing - automatically makes their own escalation seem more justified. We actually see that RD isn't listening and that she's getting worse about her pranking before they retaliate. I don't want them to be totally perfect and completely blameless in all ways. I just want to see that they made a legit effort to address the problem with RD rather than immediately jumping to escalation. Even if it goes wrong, then the fact that they at least genuinely tried shows that they're honestly upset and don't want to retaliate, but that they don't know what else to do to get her to give it a rest.
It's not a perfect episode by any means. The handling on this one could have probably used a little work here and there. For instance, I agree with the criticism that it seems really bizarre for the Mane 6 to be so bothered by some of these pranks when they laughed off so many of them back in season one. Now, it's still completely valid that they became irritated when RD wouldn't knock it off after they asked (regardless of the severity of the prank, RD should have left it alone when she realized that it was genuinely bothering them instead of just being silly fun that they didn't mind), but it's still odd that all of them would suddenly be annoyed with it. I think it would have been better to make the pranks more harmful or humiliating, or to give us more justification for why the M6 were annoyed with these as opposed to their more "Oh Rainbow, you silly little rascal" type of reaction to her pranks from previous seasons. But I'd still say it's easily a vast improvement over MMDW.
4147730 Almost anything is a VAST improvement over Mare-Do-Well. Only thing that episode was good for is inspiration for superhero parodies. Otherwise, I try not to acknowledge it's exsistance.

They needed something to pad out the season, I guess.
Don't see what else it was supposed to be, it really felt like this was just filler.
I seriously thought they were gonna do something along the lines of left 4 dead, when Bill sacrifices himself.
It's just a prank, bro.
It was a very complicated way to basically teach Rainbow, "hey, don't prank ponies if they can't handle it."
Why do I sense fan art of zombie ponies will devour the fandom for a time before the changeling episode next week?
It was just a prank, bro!
Boy did that episode suck. I feel like we, the viewers, are the ones who got pranked.

4147566 Ponies must age really slowly for this to be true.
Good ep. Not really like MDW and even that wasn't a bad ep.
Rainbow was able to afford all of those prank cookies, she must be loaded.
4147578 Being a Wonderbolt must pay real well.

It's not about the severity of the pranks.
It's about how obnoxious they were after being told to stop when not everyone is enjoying them.
I can see why people are comparing this episode to Mysterious Mare-Do-Well. But I feel that this episode handled the resolution better. Granted the build-up to the bit sloppy, but the Zombie Prank made this episode.

Ehh... I'm conflicted about this one.
