A short PSA about the Watch button · 9:25am
If you can't see or use the Watch button, enable your Javascript or stop using IE. I get at least one bug report about this a day and I couldn't figure out why this could be the case, but I tried it just now and if your Javascript is disabled you won't even see the button. I should also point out that you cannot Watch yourself (anymore) and you won't see the button on your own User Bar.
If you're absolutely 100% sure that your Javascript is enabled and you are NOT using IE, and you STILL can't see or use the watch button, then contact me. But be prepared to prove it!
If you aren't sure how to enable Javascript on your browser, try using The Google to figure it out!

Spider Belle?
Lol at the SweetieSpider.
Spider for the win.
All that cute... HNNNNGGG...!
This goes to show that Sweetie Belle is one of the epitomes of cute
"I'm not cute" - I agree with you there, spider.
The watch button doesn't work on Opera Mini either. Guess I'll have to wait until I can access my laptop again.
Aww, but I love watching myself! How else will I know when I post stories or blog updates?
>>339980
A real shame, isn't it?
Now that is a cute spider pony!
>>339997 'Tis truly the shamiest of shames.
This is why you should never learn to use magic, Sweetie.
Well I see it and I try to click on it but for some reason it would work for me. It could be internet Explorer but I still see the watch button. I try to keep clicking it but it wouldn't let me follow the person. I would then go to my Ipod and use safari to watch the person I want to watch. I think it's my computer but it could be the internet Explorer. What do you think?
Sweetie Belle the Drider queen?
Spiderbelle is not cute.
She is adorable!
....people still use IE?
>>340048
this.
I thought the only thing IE was good for was to get Firefox
Huh...sure enough, won't work on IE, works just fine when I use Safari on my phone. Odd. Thanks, though.
>>340048 I DO!
I seriously don't see the problem with it
. Plus I still have a watch button on this here site, so 's all good!
hello meanie belle
That is a lie, Sweetie. You are most certainly cute. Perhaps not adorable, but cute nevertheless
Pffft. Internet Explorer sucks more than black holes do.
NEVER
Stop useing IE?
Its my fav browser. Crome is not fun to use and Firefox don't let me log in on some sites.
But I don't know what java script is. I am glad that I mostly do this on the phone these days.
Oh, how I would like to stop using IE, but this isn't my computer and it is not my decision to make. So, no watching people.
Screw you I am still watching myself. A little tampering in page's source code and you are set
>>340167 Try Opera. http://opera.com
Sweetie Thoth. Cute.
>people still using Internet Explorer
>2012
Using a Microsoft web browser on Windows is a great way to open yourself up to viruses that take advantage of its integration. What's more, it just doesn't have the many awesome extensions you can get for Firefox or Chrome, or the many awesome features Opera comes with.
- Chrome
- Firefox
- Opera
>>340187
Huh, you can still do it? That's pretty funny.
>>340214
Damn you, I'll stay in 2005 and like it.
>>340217 Well, not with the watch button; I never saw it on my own page. Although it is not impossible to do it other ways...
>>340167
>>340229 Stay with viruses from last decade, then.
Actually Chromium is the best choice for browser
inb4 Spider Belle fanfic.
I can understand why a lot of people have disabled Java, there have been quite a few security issues in the newer versions that leave computers highly vulnerable to attack. Anybody with a newer version of Java is much better off just waiting for a competent update to fix the issues.
Still using IE though? Nah, no excuse is acceptable there. :V
Behold, Thrackerzod's second form! Arachnotaur Sweetie, Queen of the spider ponies!
If anyone is looking to test this fix and needs an author to watch, I humbly and selflessly volunteer myself.
And yet someone will still screw up and be a bitch about it.
>>340214 I would use them, but chrome seems to be the one that has all the viruses on it in my case.
>>340230
Objection!
Chromium is the best choice for browser for people who don't know, and don't want to know, about browsers.
Firefox is (still) far superior for web-developer types and people who use a wide variety of addons.
>>340421 It is a very good browser if you have two hours to spend waiting for plugins to load.
Also you realize that you can mod chromium in any way you want?
>>340405
>Chrome
>Viruses
What did you smoke?
>>340214
System security and browser extensions in one paragraph.
That spider-belle is adorable and horrifying. Adorrifying.
That's a word, now.
I love spiders!
:3
Yes, for real.
... and I guess I am the only one who didn't see (or care) that following yourself was possible.
If you find yourself needing to test your watch button, you can do so on my page.... *cough*
But I wanted to follow myself :(
Really? Am I the ONLY one who's inner nerd is filled with an innate rage at the Spiderbelle with only SIX LEGS???
>>340594 More like adorrible?
>>340682 You're forgetting her front legs, that makes 8.
>>340727 Oh. Oh...
I thought those were just part of her design.
Well, this is embarrassing.
>>340229
I already used Firefox in 2005.
>>340740
Yes.
Now if you need me, I need to shake a stick at some kids, and tell them to get off my lawn.
>>340026 It's the Internet! My friends and I have had the same problem. Google Chrome and my phone browser were the answer to this problem.
Why would anyone follow themself? Or use Internet Explorer?
>>340749 Okay then. I thought it was my computer. It's really old. I got a new laptop but then I had the same problem. Thank you
Spider Belle makes me think of Chaos Witch Quelaag... so many deaths...
People actually still use IE?
>>340806 Anytime!
Our brand new high school computers do the same thing with Internet Explorer.
Hmmm... I find it rather odd why the watch button just completely doesn't work in IE, when the Read Later and Favorites buttons at the very least make the changes to the account when they all presumably do the same sort of thing on the backend.
LOL, using IE is definitely going full derp.
Hmmm... Well, I managed to find an IE workaround from the user end with a normal IE9 install, which implies that the actual issue can be fixed from the site side by changing the site compatibility from IE 8 to IE 9
User Workaround:
1) From any page on the site hit F12 or under the tools menu select the F12 Developer Tools
2) On the top menu bar, click the Document mode button and select IE9 Standards
3) Close the F12 Developer Tools window
4) Repeat for any new tabs opened (The work around carries over if you follow links to other parts of the site within the same tab, but doesn't if you open a new tab)
Site Fix:
1) Change the IE=8 metatag to IE=9
or
1) Remove the IE compatibility metatag
(To put it in general terms: If you tell the browser to not follow the standards, you cannot expect it to follow the standards)
Hmm, Internet Explorer's a no-go eh? I'm wondering what JavaScript is going on behind the scenes that IE just flat out won't support.
Is it all versions of IE? Including 9 (10 for the Windows 8 users out there), or just legacy versions (8, 7, or, if you're a glutton for punishment, 6)?
I use Chrome primarily myself, and would never browse the web in Internet Explorer anymore. However, as a web developer, this puzzle intrigues me! Care to share any insight as to why IE itself is causing what seems to be a simple on_click event to just not work?
yay I looove these common sense blog posts!
Yeah, I noticed the button to Watch oneself go away awhile ago. It made me sad, but I was already watching myself, so it was okay. Then I somehow stopped watching myself and became upset.
I'm sad.
IE is seriously the worst browser on the planet. People still using it probably shouldn't be using the internet in general.
>>341094
Check the post above yours. It says it is because there is a tag on the site that causes IE 9 to pretend to be IE 8 which make things not work.
>>341094
Well, The puzzle isn't really that hard given the fact that the Meta tags are telling the site to use the IE 8 Javascript engine, which didn't handle certain sorts of javascript how the standards ended up settling on, so the fix is to use the IE 9 Javascript engine instead.(IE 8 and earlier users are out of luck. The use of the IE 8 javascript engine was also the source of an assortment of other issues with the site.)
>>340741 Sticks are sooo last century, tasers are the new thing for tellin' kids to get off your lawn.
Sweetie Belle is Lolth
Wait, you could follow yourself?.... Huh. Never noticed.
Yeah... People will be mad about the Internet Explorer thing... But come on. IE is just seems horrible compared to everything else that's available.
Great! Now who shall watch me?
People are still using IE?
Lol at the Spider Belle. Not sure if cute, or just ugly
>>341092
or you could just not use Internet Explorer
>>341473
Well, you are the one complaining about all the bug reports about the issue, not me. Generally the easiest way to get people to stop reporting known bugs is to just fix them, especially if the cause is known.
>>341492
the bug is that people are using IE, and that's not something we can fix
>>341499
Okay... Not sure if you are implying that you are specifically setting the site up to not work for IE (in which case there are far more effective methods to do so) or if you are saying that you don't want to take the time to make a fairly simple fix which would both satisfy those users that do use IE (Its a fact of life that any major web page that isn't specifically devoted to another browser or OS will have a large number of users connecting with IE unless you specifically prevent them from connecting which is rarely a good idea) and would stop some of the bug reports coming in. And if you really wanted to stop all the bug reports coming in on the issue, after fixing the silly bug you can always add in noscript code telling people to turn on javascript.
Spider pony?
That's how I envisioned Dermarth. Awesome.
I use Chrome and IE. I don't get the difference. Why is Chrome better? Why does IE suck? I don't have any problems on ANY site for either of these browsers.
>>341652
Because some people think they are funny when they deride IE, regardless of accuracy.
Reminds me of Porky from Mother.
>>341652
>>341657
IE is buggier, has more security flaws (excepting Safari), uses more memory, runs slower, doesn't implement HTML and CSS standards correctly, isn't easily extensible, has poor developer tools, doesn't update often, and is too deeply integrated with Windows.
Good enough of reasons for you?
>>341745
Funny. That sounds just like when I tried out Firefox. The damn browser glitched on me every time, even on this site. I had to uninstall it after a few weeks, but I replaced it with chrome. Long story short: I have had no problems with IE or Chrome, but Firefox sucks. At least I tried it before criticizing it.
... Why is MeanieBell a spider?
Sorry Sweetie Belle, you're cuter as a spider-pony than a regular one, which is actually an accomplishment.
>>341760 What version of Firefox were you using?
>>341745 IE9 isn't as bad. MS has really been trying to fix IE since Mozilla kicked its ass.
This said, I'm using Firefox now because I'm on Linux, namely Xubuntu 12.04.1
>>341880
To be honest, I don't remember.
>>341884 You should give ver. 15 a shot. It's pretty nice. Though Chrome is pretty sweet too.
>>341886
Alright, I'll give it a second chance. If version 15 fails, then Firefox isn't for me. Sounds fair, right?
>>341891 Yeah, after about 15 versions, they've had the time to figure it out.
>>341760
I'm a programmer and Web Developer. I have to use every major Web Browser on a regular basis.
>>341880
IE9 is definitely better than every previous version and 10 is much better than 9, but both are still extremely far behind everyone else on HTML5 and CSS3 standards. For example, open this link in Firefox or Chrome, then open it in IE. Big difference.
>>341945
Is programming hard? I was wondering because after getting my Bio and Psych degree, I was thinking of going back to get a degree with something related to computers.
Also...HOLY CRAP WTF? I opened that link that was meant for Yuko, and that is a big difference.
I'll have to keep that in mind for a future reference.
>>341964
It can be. It requires a lot of out of the box and extremely logical thinking. Also the ability to solve problems without much direction and deal with your computer telling you that you're an idiot all day. (At least, that's how it feels some days) But in all honesty, I couldn't think of a job that I'd find as enjoyable or satisfying.
And yeah, you see why I have issues with IE? Every time I make a website, it takes a ton of extra work to get it to look right in IE, simply because they don't follow the standards correctly. Not trying to hate on anyone for using it, but you know...
I'm still watching myself, HA SUCK IT MODFAGS
>>341971
Meh, people tell other people that they're idiots everyday. *cough* Poultron *cough*
But I'm glad you enjoy what you do.
I assume the standards for IE work better for Windows based programs and websites. Excuse me for making assumptions since I'm not really bushed up on browsers and their history, but isn't IE older than firefox and chrome (well I know IE is older than chrome)? If that's the case, wouldn't the standards for IE be the default that every programmer and web developer should learn and use more often? Or is it the fact that Chrome and Firefox outdid IE when they came out?
Wow, Meanie Belle is even invading FIM.
Harbinger decided that Commander Shepard is not worth chasing after and decided to collect little fillies instead.
...I was just doing something Mass Effect related, okay?
>>341945
And nearly every line of the css includes Mozilla and Webkit specific stuff. And guess what? If you strip that out it breaks the page!
And based on how it is going (I do not feel like wasting time on doing all of it) it will look exactly like it does in IE 9 by the time all the browser specific stuff is gone.
If you want to prove something, show a page without anything browser or render engine specific.
>>341964
Depends. It gets easier the more you do it, so do as much as you can outside of class (both research* and doing).
* Cause it is easier to remember things if you have heard of them before.
Actually, IE is good for getting Firefox, which is good for getting Chrome, which is good for getting Rockmelt, which pwns all the other browsers by having built-in FB, Twitter, Tumblr, Youtube, etc. and supporting all the Chrome plugins. Boo-ya!
>>341998
The standards are actually determined by The World Wide Web Consortium. They're the ones who ultimately decide what makes it into HTML and CSS. Unfortunately you're right though. Since IE is the oldest and has the biggest user base, we're kinda forced to take the extra time to make sure that it works in older versions of IE, specifically down to Version 7 at the lowest for the company I work for.
>>342197
Haha. Good catch. I've never actually noticed that. Still, if you remove all the -moz, -webkit, and -o properties (leaving behind the actual CC3 properties), the pages still renders correctly minus the animations (since CSS3 animations are still under review). As proof, here it is as displayed in IE10 which can't read any of those specialty properties. It's much better than IE9, but still fails to load completely correctly. Thanks for calling me out on that though. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a demo that only uses CSS3.
Regardless, my point still stands. IE is harder to develop for than other browsers (almost every Web Developer you ask will agree with me), and they're still not completely HTML5/CSS3 compatible. If you want more specifics, Mozilla has a great site detailing all HTML tags and CSS properties along with historical and current browser compatibility. Check it out.
Can't watch myself? darn, no more stalking myself when I'm bored.
That said, Spider-Belle isn't cute.
She's ADORABOO!
Another comment on the blog! Insert random pony smilies with the intent of displaying some form of emotion without using words.

Another random quip about the level of intelligence of users this note is directed to, followed by yet another smiley for good measure.
Insert comment to sympathize with other users agreeing with them in hopes of being looked upon as an acceptable member of the community. To finish, an ellipse to suggest a thought that could lead to more...
>>340192
Don't it cost money to download?
>>340230
I am not kidding. I am not on programing. I don't know what java scribt is. The only thing I downloaded java for was for Runescape and some other sites. I don't know what was in it.
And what did I derp on?
For IE9 users with issues: Open developer console and change document mode to IE9 standards, that should (temporarily) fix the problem. In order for it to work perfectly for IE9, the site will have to be updated to fully support it/use it by default instead of IE8 mode. If enabling JScript didn't work, try that.
>>341945 Opens instantly in my default IE9. Wat'chu talkin' 'bout?
I have no grievances about IE9, or even 7 or 8; they worked for what I use them for, and I can't complain about their capability. I can understand why programmers don't like it, but all the others who simply hate IE? I don't get 'em.
