...that whenever I write stories for competitions, people expect sequels?
Maybe because your stories are good? (Shrugs)
Because you create an intriguing universe that offers rich expansion potential. At least, you do in this case.
Because...it's good?
Because you're a great writer and a contest shouldn't stop you from expanding on an expandable story.
That said, never write anything unless you want to write it.
Because you've got excellent technical and creative skills that intrigue. :)
You're just that good
Because people never do what you want. :B
I have no idea, but as your producer, I have to say that you have no studio imposing deadlines or insane demands on you, so I expect you to write what makes you happy to write.
Else, I shall become very cross with you.
it's because your work is just that good.
Because people believe you capable of doing a good sequel and that creates interest
You are too skilled an author for your own good.
Now write a sequel.
Because your stories are just that good?
Because stories written for competitions are artificially cut short to fit the demands of the competition, while the thought expressed in them isn't.
Either learn to contain it, or stop complaining and write.
Events in life are never in isolation, and are the result of past events and inspire future ones. The short stories you do for competitions depict events that leave your audience wondering what future events they will inspire. To find the answer, we ask for sequels to sate out curiosity.
I demand a sequel to this blog
I imagine people will demand sequels from you, regardless. You write good stories, so, especially if they're on the short side, people are going to want more.
You just have to decide whether to give them more, or keep churning out more original ideas.
