Super late memorial day stuff · 10:21am May 31st, 2016
Thank you to all who have served and who made the ultimate sacrifice in order for myself and others to be free enough to be able to post on a website dedicated to fan fiction of a show about cartoon horses originally designed to be sold for little girls. I wish I had the guts to be able to do what you do. Those service men and women are truly what makes this country (USA) the greatest one to live in. Yes, l said greatest.
Why are you proclaiming that? l hear you ask. Well, while things aren't perfect, things could be worse. America's poverty line, while absurdly calculated, is higher than many countries' standard of living. Racism, sexism and other societal ills are still an issue but it could be worse. We as a society don't (overtly) force women into roles they don't want to accept; homosexuality, while condemned in some places and by some fringe groups, is accepted throughout the country. We don't go around killing people because of their sexual orientation. For crying out loud the biggest kerfuffle we as a culture are having right now is over bathrooms. We have come a long way from whether or not if women should be able to vote.
The military is instrumental for us as a society to be able to scream at each other in this manner. Without our formidable two ocean Navy, fearless Marines, dauntless Air Force and brave Army (and the Coast Guard I guess) America would not be as great of a country as it is.
Loss is also a factor in the holiday many of us had. Remember the dead for they too have names and families with them. Cracked .com had an excellent article yesterday about dealing with the loss. Here is the article. I touched upon those themes in my crappy story that l wrote before l joined and l want to share it with a (slightly) broader audience so it's tagged as well.
If you didn't do it yesterday, why don't you thank a service member for their sacrifice today. It won't hurt you to meet someone new and the person you thank, will appreciate it very much.
