Two Hands to Write With · 8:01pm Mar 6th, 2016
I haven't got anything to say this week, but I won't give up on the weekly blog posts. I have to say, I'm impressed with how much my writing skill has evolved just within a few short months. I've still got a long way to go, but this week I've been writing non-stop and I've absolutely enjoyed it.
'Relationships are Evil' is the main focus I'm on right now, along with a one-off I'm writing on the side. I enjoy the idea behind RaE, though I still haven't figured out an ending. It'll be a long narrative, so I'm not too worried. It is the first story that I haven't cared about the amount of words per chapter, so expect long and short variations.
I'm a little bit surprised by all the negative votes on it though. I have to assume that it's because of the characters being shipped, and not the writing itself. That's the one problem I have with FimFiction. The voting system.
Negative votes are great to tell readers what others think about a story, so they can choose whether to avoid it or not. The higher the down votes, the more likely it is that it is poorly written, typos abundant, or goes no where. The problem that I have with it, is that it doesn't tell me, the writer, what their issue is with it. If my story is written poorly, I want to know about it, but down voting doesn't tell me what's poorly written. My goal is to become the best writer I can be, and I can't do that without knowing what the problem is with my work.
I generally don't down vote things I read, unless I find lots of spelling errors, grammatical issues, etc. Of course, I also don't up vote unless I really enjoyed it, and found it to be phenomenal.
Negativity is actually better to me than positivity. If you tell me I'm garbage, I'll likely agree with you, and that will inspire me to do better with myself and try harder. I'll never be able to impress you, I know that, but that doesn't mean I can't try. On the other hand, if you tell me I'm great, I won't know how to respond and I'm not sure how to continue to be great in your eyes, which stresses me out.
"But TheTimeSword, if negativity helps, then you would think down voting would help you". It doesn't, as I don't know how to take it. You could be doing it because you dislike me, dislike the story itself, or just dislike that your waifu is being shipped to something else. If you don't let me know what you don't like, I can't do anything to improve that. So I pretty much just ignore the up vote/down vote bar.
And that's a big thing I love about FimFiction, people will absolutely let you know what you did wrong, what you failed at. Letting me know what you think helps me, even if I don't respond to it. I'm also on the website FanFiction, and I have never received a bad review on it. The positive reviews feel nice, sure, but that doesn't help me improve myself. This website is far more helpful than any other I've been on.
I love writing, and I won't stop. Improvement is my goal, and I hope one day I can look back at these poorly written blog posts and laugh.
At the top of this post, I said I didn't have anything to say this week. Guess I was wrong.
