Okay everyone, Paradise here! This week, as we approach the Spring festival, I've decided to throw the alicornists a bone in my entries. Since the six harmony bearers are very important figures in Alicornist belief, I'm going to take an in-depth look at their six modern day descendants, who made a botched attempt to claim the elements of harmony from the Princess Ponies. For my first look, I'm going to be taking a gander at the element of Laughter, Surprise.
Born in the oriental community of Hoofkaido, Surprise stood out from her other sisters by having a far more developed sense of humor that the more serious hoofkadians, who stand greatly on honor and ceremony. Her humor was frowned on by her friends and family, but she and her odd behaviors found a perfect home here at Dream Valley. Surprise has brought the light of Laughter to us and our community. Truly, this court jester was one of the finest additions to our herd.
Much as her much-famed pink ancestor, she seeks to make the ponies around her laugh in their darkest of times. Sure, Surprise is not the party planner Pinkie was, but the same joy that her ancestor had at bringing joy to her friends through her pranking and practical jokes. Sure, some ponies see it as annoying or downright hurtful, and there are those who claim that Surprise is crazy. But the only thing she is guilty of putting a whoopee cushion under a princess's throne, or a bear trap in The captain of the Hoofkaido guard's bathtub.
And it seems, to those who don't know her, that she is nothing a cruel and heartless bully. She plays pranks that make ponies cry, so what is there to like about her? I mean, besides the fact that she spent four hours dressed like a clown cheering Fizzy up in her hospital bed after she had her tonsils taken out. Or that she made Posey laughed when her little daughter got foalnapped by the gizmonks, until the royal guard were able to bring her back in one piece. She is selfless to the point of caring more about other ponies being happy, over what other ponies think of her.
Surprise is a Pegasus, and lacks Pinkie Pie's earth pony magic that gave her cartoony-like abilities, but it suits her personality well. She's very energetic, zipping all over the place excited by everyone and everything around her. Surprise is very positive about everybody she meets, and only sees the good in anyone who is not a villain. When it comes to giving ponies second chances, Surprise is right there with Posey in standing up for enemies who want to be friends.
Did you know Surprise is a big Manga fan, having grown up with the stuff in Hoofkaido? She has the largest ponykemon card collection in the castle? And she can quote any issue of Yokai Sundial from memory. Her cosplay skills are so good, she is second only to Masquerade as a mistress of disguise! Surprise is REALLY turned on by cowpony stallions of the old west, admiring their courage and sense of justice- that's why she married Tex, I suppose. Surprise is very feminine, though.. she and I have often set aside time top read classical fairy tales about the princess of old (I'll also tell you a secret- Surprise secretly wishes she was a princess herself!)
And as to looks and personality... can you say blonde bombshell? Surprise is the Marilyn Monroe of Dream Valley- bubbly, always laughing, keeping everybody in a feel-good mood. I've heard one poster of her in a quiapo (hoofkaidian dress with a split up the side that exposes the hoof and leg all the way to the flank) burst into flames just from how hot she looked on it. Every stallion would love to have a roll in the hay with her- this mare simply oozes fun and friendliness. She has a beauty second only to Gypsy, but accentuated by an excited positivity Gypsy does not have. The balloons on her flank don't symbolize a party- rather, they symbolize her desire to bring fun to everybody in a room. She always makes herself the center of attention, due to her loud voice and boisterous attitude.
Besides her family, Surprise is actually pretty close to Danny, Megan's little brother. The two have taken up the art of aerial photography of Ponyland, and he's always hanging around Surprise and her family. I don't think Surprise took it very well when Danny MARRIED her daughter, but shew took it in stride. Heck, I mean Surprise is part of a campaign to reform the views on historical characters like Diamond Tiara and Svengallop. I suppose it's her ability to see the best in everyone and everything. To put it simply, this mare just wants everyone around her to LAUGH!
