I get about this far...
... and my everything decides to fuck off and die.
Now if you can't tell, this is Derpy and her nearest and dearest. From the left we have Sparkler (or Amethyst Star), Derpy (obviously), Dinky, Written Script and Golden Harvest (or Carrot Top depending on how well she knows you).
There's a little pile of headcanon behind this, of course. Isn't there always? Derpy is in her late 30s, older than most of the main cast for sure. She was originally married to Written Script, but they divorced while Dinky was still very young. Amethyst (or Sparkler) is just turning 19 at the time of this picture and is attending Canterlot University, studying Equestrian Literature. She was adopted by Derpy when she was 11 - at which point Dinky was 2. Dinky, or course, is 11 now. Written Script went on to marry Golden Harvest, who was already Derpy's friend at the time. The whole thing was amicable because Derpy holds a grudge about as well as she holds a piano, but Carrot does have her occasional jealous moments. She and Written Script will often take Dinky away on weekends when Derpy is working overtime.
And that's the background for Guiding Light and its sequel. Or sequels if I ever get around to writing them. 
Sure, the show conflicts with it a little but eh, like I ever cared about that...
