I haven't gone dark quite yet · 5:16am Oct 29th, 2015
Just thought I'd post an update since I've been quiet. Work on A Darkened Land has been on hold for a couple weeks, half because of school, half because I've been toying with a certain idea.
And I've finally started learning art. The two are related.
Starting tonight, I'm going to be trying to find a good style. I shopped around a bit and I'm digging the idea of polygonal/angular features.
To really learn art, or anything, a fire under your ass helps. In other words: something pushing you, whether it's school, colleagues, or a starting on a large project. I'm gunning for the last of those.
So nothing confirmed, but I'm hoping to make A Darkened Land into a massive comic and basically use it to learn art over the course of >1 year or so. It's still all very early though, and I plan on practicing art almost daily for 1-2 months before I really dive in and get my feet wetter-than-wet.
As far as progress on A Darkened Land itself goes, I've got a couple chapters done and I'm starting on the first character story this weekend. I'm planning to do a writing jam this weekend and, if not finish it, get it pretty close to finished.
Let me know what you think of the comic idea in the comments, if you think anything of it at all. For an unrelated closing note: check out this game. It's the bomb.
Is that an orca with paws?

It is a whaledog, and it is a beautiful abomination of science.
Yo dude, respect. I been on this learns-to-draw journey for five years now. You can see my progress in this montage sequence:

My rule has been a picture every day, no excuses. Today is day 1618 and I haven't missed a day. Good luck; it's hard sometimes and you /will/ burn out but it's worth the journey.
That's an interesting art style, it makes me think of stained glass.
PS: Down with the whaledog, viva la Maypul!
Love the idea of using your story to expand other skill sets. I'll be waiting with baited breathe for future chapters and updates on your art.

And wow, that is really impressive man. I've always wanted to improve my drawing skills as well and that seems like a really great way to do it.
3518154 The rule that will get you through moments when life is crazy and you don't have time to art properly is 'there is no lower limit on the quality of my daily drawing'.
If you're flat out all day and can't be assed it's totally legit to draw a smiley face on the back of your hand in marker. What's important is that I've done something - because each day I do something is a promise to myself to do better tomorrow. It's a little psychological trick that's kept me going this long even through all of life's usual trials.
Art really gets to be worthwhile. It's a similar time investment and mental state as getting good at a video game except, at the end of the day, you have something awesome to show your friends.
