I haven't been much of a blogger since I was in high school and my first year or so of college. However, having gone through art school I do have a thing for making "artist's statements" and this seems to be a good format to do so. Therefore, anytime I submit a fic I'll write a short explanation of what went into making it after it's approved.
I first started thinking of a Rainbow Dash/Derpy story about a month ago. Rainbow Dash is, after all, best Mane6 pony while Derpy is best background pony, so it seemed natural. Not only that, since they've interacted and have ample reason to interact (both being pegasi who at least occasionally work together), it seemed like a good first foray into the realm of ponyfics. The actual story of "Ditzy Don't" came from a completely different idea that I may end up doing later. I'd planned on doing a reveal of how Rainbow Dash and Derpy met tied in with how Derpy got her cutie mark, but had planned on doing it in a series of flashbacks which would tie into a current issue with Rainbow Dash being annoyed at Derpy's ditziness. However, as I fleshed out the present day storyline, it gradually became more interesting to me than the flashback scenes, and I realized that the flashbacks would have just taken away from the narrative I was building. By the time I started writing, I'd decided to just let this story be its own. It took me about a week to finish, and I was trying to finish it on that deadline due to the fact that, as of my submission, I headed out on R&R. As I said, I'll probably submit the flashback story later.
I'm probably going to continue submitting short stories like this for awhile, though I do have a few more epic length stories brewing in the back of my mind. However, short stories are good to get the feel of the storytelling style I want to use for my MLP:FiM fics (I'm a big fan of keeping the original flavor in my fics... though I've been known to dabble in crackfics). While I'm being kicked around the Middle East and Europe I'll be working on a Spike-centric fic I'm thinking of calling "Rolling in Beaches." Yeah. I abuse puns in my spare time. If you like "Ditzy Don't" you have something to look forward to from me, which I'm hoping to finish before I have to go back to my old FOB (which is not FOB Equestria, I'm afraid).
