fanfiction.net becomes even more lame · 3:38pm Oct 2nd, 2015

fanfiction.net now has code to prevent you from copying text from its stories. So if you want to quote from them (like, in a comment), you have to view the page source code and copy from there. There's no download option. I don't know if there used to be.

Viewing the page with a proper script-blocker engaged will stop that from happening.

Of course, it also results in center-justification of all fiction of the site, and that makes me want to cry.

Surely, this large inconvenience will prevent ponies from stealing fanfiction. :trollestia: Surely.

Sadly it's been like that for a while, BH.

I was wondering what was up. I've had a couple instances in the last month or so when I've wanted to copy text off ff.net and haven't been able to[1]. I suppose I could comment here with my opinion on that site as a whole, but I'll refrain[2]. It's nice to know what's going on, though.

[1] I have no idea why I wanted to do this thing. Honestly, I don't think I want to remember why, either.

[2] Except to say, "Knighty, please get us the fancy new multi-fandom setup you've been talking about! Please please please please please!"

There's never been a download option -- I remember having to go to the author's personal website to download Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, and being mightly pissed off at that.

FF.net has never been a good website, in my opinion.

Is the system to prevent theft or malware or viruses that invade the site? tThe latter seems to be the only subject on the update of the main page recently.

People get around things. It is their nature. Fighting that nature with roadblocks just shows a lack of foresight.

Yeeah, I noticed this a while ago. In fact, I couldn't even select text, which is really annoying because I usually select the text I read to keep some indication of where I've gotten.

3436807 They seem to be following the Ubisoft DRM model: piss off your customers, and encourage them to bypass the security altogether. At least in this case you aren't buying something...

While ff.net seems to have a noble cause for this, (the prevention of plagerism) it seems about as effective as a hotdog thrown down a hallway.
My momma used to say that you can't churn butter with a toothpick, and you cannot stop thieves with security features made from toothpicks.

Best way to stop plagerists; nail them to the fucking wall immediately.

With a railroad spike through the sternum.

Followed by a running chainsaw anally inserted sideways.

They changed it because of rampant plagiarism. Which is less of a thing nowadays. Hurrah. But there were fandoms wars about them 2000s-2010 so I'm happy about the change. I think there are add-ons for fanfiction.net that allow you to download stories though.

Firefox supports an excellent add-on called "RightToClick," which disables scripts blocking right-click and text selection. It works for fanfiction.net and can be found here.

I'm sure there's something similar for Chrome or any other open source browser you might use.

Fimfic's expansion is going to end fanfiction.net, and I'm going to be so happy when it does.

you cannot stop thieves with security features made from toothpicks.

i disagree
when used right, a toothpick is a wonderful anti thief tool
you just have to have a lot of them
and a weight based lever arm to swing them doesn't hurt (you)

For downloading fanficition FanFicFare is what you want, there's a calibre plugin and a standalone website.

+1 for FanFicFare as a calibre plugin. It still works on ff.net as I just tested it. It also will give you epubs from this site that retain such boring things as bold or italic text which knighty broke a long time ago for the built in download option.

Haven't noticed this problem myself. Though, considering the fact that I use opera 12 as my default web browser, it could be simply too old to properly notice that 'protection'.
*After checking with Firefox* Yes, it seems that using an old browser sometimes has its perks.

Why would you ever want that?...

Anyway, I use FanFictionDownloader, it works okay. It's better than manually copying each chapter :derpyderp1:

they're preventing ctrl+c, when they should be preventing ctrl+v :trollestia:

I bet Bad Horse posted these last two blogs back to back in order to see if people are more interested in boobs or fanfiction.net bashing.

When did this start? :rainbowhuh:

3437667
At least two years. The first I remember people complaining about this was October 2013 (and checking some forum posts verifies that). I was rather surprised that this post wasn't about them pulling something new and more terrible out of their hat.

I suppose Bad Horse must really not use the site much.

3436828
You don't actually need one when you can just save the web-page (as text even), from your browser's default options.

Though, admittedly, download options do make things slightly faster.

3437938
I haven't had any trouble copy-pasting text from stories though. I must be missing something here.

3438309
Apparently it doesn't always work on everyone, depending on what they're running. Some script-block programs, for example, let you continue to copy-paste.

Don't use fanficfare for fimfic - it breaks quite a bit of the formatting. Download as HTML and convert it yourself instead.

What is worse is its terrible accessibility:

FF.Net prevents Text-To-Speech. Whatever their stupid reasons, disabling JavaScript allows Text-To-Speech and select/Copy to work again. This hamfisted stupidity of FF.Net reminds me about the SonyRootKit:

Sony decided to put a RootKit on its AudioCDs for preventing ripping. It is not like that could cause a ComsumerBackLash and open Sony up to both civil and criminal liability. The thing is that if one uses any kind of computer other than a WinTel, obscures the CDIndex, or just hold down the ShiftKey, one can block the RootKit.

Screwing over the blind does not open FF.Net to civil or criminal liability, but it does not generate goodwill either.

I am curious, using the calibre plugin version, what formatting is broken?

3439078
I use the calibre plugin and it formats perfectly, even includes the authors note boxes.

I've tested this stuff. The following doesn't work:
- Strikethrough
- Text size
- Colours
- Right aligned

Check out this story (password: "ost"), and try it out for yourself if you don't believe me.

I wonder if there is some weird bug that is being triggered with this test method. I actually wish it wouldn't pick up color in The Powers of Harmony because I find it annoying to read.

Fan fiction.net hasn't been a worthwhile website for quite some time.
A while ago, they had a purge targeting m-rated stories, and apparently declared slash fics m rated by default.
Many good authors proceeded to jump ship, and others joined them in protest.
...
Many high-quality tales died that day.

Why would you be on ff.net? Most of the writing there honestly qualifies as guilty pleasure at best. Worst of all, there's no community there.

3455659 I don't even remember now. Cap' Chrysalid publishes stuff there.

3440251
I know this was forever ago, well a few weeks, but I just tried that link with the calibre version of fanficfare and it formatted everything perfectly.

Really? I suppose I'll have to take another look, then. :applejackunsure:
