Anniversary of the end of World War II · 1:45pm Sep 2nd, 2015
70 years ago, on this very day, the bloodiest conflict in the history of mankind has finally come to its conclusion.
More than sixty million lives have perished in this war: soldiers and civilians, Soviets, Britons and Americans, Germans, Italians and Japanese, Chinese and Koreans and many other nations have paid the terrible price in blood, lives and sweat.
The Allied victory in this war has secured relative peace for years to come. Despite the tension between the two superpowers - USSR and USA - and constant attempts to decimate the opposing power bloc, everyone was still smart enough to be careful, especially during the Caribbean crisis, when events already started spiralling out of control and the slightest spark could ignite atomic fire across the world.
This peace would not have been able without the heroism of many brave troopers of the Allies: the peoples of Soviet Union who had the highest casualties rate (approximately twenty-seven million) and yet broke the backbone of fascists; the peoples of British Commonwealth who had to endure constant bombings by Luftwaffe, who fought in African deserts, in the Atlantic Ocean, or in South-Eastern Asia; the Americans, who returned what they owed for Pearl Harbor with interest and kept the attention of Japanese militarists away from Soviet Union; the Chinese and the Koreans who resisted the oppression; the Germans and Italians who did not embrace the fascist ideology - and many, many more people of various backgrounds from various countries.
The time, alas, is merciless; not many of those who witnessed the horrors of World War II remain alive. We, the current generation, must learn from them as much as possible, so as to avoid the new global conflict, because war never changes.
To the veterans of World War II, regardless of their origins, I can only offer my congratulations, and best wishes.
