SapphireLibra3 Rants: The Problem with MTV · 5:57pm Aug 26th, 2015
So this isn't really big, but it annoyed me this morning. Do you remember a time when MTV, also known as Music Television actually played music? Nowadays, you can only catch music videos early in the morning, and only two hours worth of them. After that it's just reality shows that no one cares about.
I'm sorry, but I don't care about your shallow problems, and honestly that show Dating Naked is really stupid to me. I'd love to see someone try and spend an entire date with ME naked and not lose their mind. Not to put myself out there, but I think I'm pretty attractive, and I have people lose their minds around me with my clothes ON. That show is just an excuse to get people strung out and to cause drama. Also, you can't find love on those shows, I'm sorry. Me, it takes me a good month or so before I know that my feelings are genuine. Three nights with just one date, and then watching him suck face with other girls he's seen naked?
Nope. Can't see it happening.
And then concerning the two hours or so of music videos, they play the same videos over and over again. Yesterday I saw two videos I sort of liked, and this morning I thought to myself "hey, why don't I try and catch those videos again today?" Well guess what? They didn't play them. Instead I saw the same tired videos I always see from the same artists over and over again, and one of them played TWICE. They couldn't try and play Marvin Gaye or Kiss Me Quick during one of those times?
And now they're just showing Reality Shows, where they could be playing more music videos. But hey, what do I know about TV, right?
All I know is, if your station is called Music TV, you might want to think about playing more music.
Yes! In fact I remember the very first video they played when that station premiered in August of 1981. (That was right about the time I got my first computer, too.
That song was Video Killed The Radio Star by the Buggles.
Also, back then, they played a lot of oldies, too. Things by the Rolling Stones and other older groups. Occasionally they'd even play some Beatles songs.
As I recall it all started going bad back in the very early 90s when they started doing TV shows. This wasn't so bad at first since they ran shows like Daria, which I happened to like. Still, they just kept getting further and further away form the music until I stopped watching MTV some time around 1993, I think it was. I have no idea what strange, bizarre, boring and useless monstrosity it's since mutated into and, frankly, I could spend the rest of my life happily not knowing.
never really watch MTV you gave me an excuse not to watch it
The truth has been spoken.
Look up the trope, "Network Decay".
Oh, thang goodness! I thought I was the only person not adding to their popularity!
F-cup, I presume?
So, you're pretty much the equivalent of Rita Ora or Jessica Alba?
Sense!
Quite enough, apparently.
But yes, excellent point. It's like Cartoon Network deciding to only show live-action shows except in the mornin.... or Disney never showing another Fairy or Princess movie again! Might as well just say amount Everest got cut in half by a giant samurai made of energy!!! But that's television. People want more unrealistic reality TV, so they get more unrealistic reality TV. It's sad and unfortunate that the networks let the public decide what's best for the network. If I wanted to see something unrealistic, I'll do what I've done since I was 3: watch funny-stupid cartoons where physics is practically ignored, like Tom and Jerry, or overexaggerations of urban myths, like Regular Show, or something with a ridiculous amount of explosions like DBZ or even Power Rangers, or something scientifically impossible like Chaotic or (of course) Code Lyoko! I'm not gonna tell CNN to start airing Girls of the Playboy Mansion or Toonami to air The Walking Dead just because I feel it would be better for the network to air those shows there! Networks have their names for a reason: so people know what kind of shows air on them.
I respect MTV. They introduced me to music. I used to stay up late to catch the Top 20 Countdown and woke up early to watch more before moving on to watch Hi-Five!. They are probably the reason I love music so much now. But they are slowly slipping away fro the great quality network i knew them to be. And it is a sad truth that such a respectable channel has deteriorated into such a sad state. It makes me so sad... mad... sadmad!
But the main issue is the type of shows. It's bad enough that half the music videos of this generation of the 21st Century consists of 3+ minutes of guys dancing with half-naked girls... or just half naked girls dancing. I don't care how much you get paid, your dignity is worth more than a few million dollars! But it didn't end there. Now reality TV decides the one way to be realistic is to have just as much explicit content stretched out over a longer time! I don't care if you're a J-cup with curves an anaconda couldn't fit around, have some MOTHERFUCKING dignity (excuse my French)! Yeesh! Next, when they are raped or nearly raped or their sex tape is leaked to the public, they'll be screaming bloody murder about how they were used and abused. Good grief, the things people do for television...
But that's my take. Very good point made, Sapphire. In fact, I'm gonna rant about the degradation of TV! Thanks for the inspiration!
