As in be a setting at least a decade into the future. I've been thinking about where I was taking the plot of the story and it just require to have the story take place sometime in the future of the FiM universe. The number one huge reason being that virtual technology exists within the story, something mostly perceived as a futuristic thing. Secondly, with the canon technology status of Equestria being mildly inconsistent, going from horse chariots to the FlimFlam brothers' magical steampunk vehicle; from whatever is in Dr. Hooves' basement (yes I believe that's his canon name now) to Button Mash at an arcade cabinet and Vinyl Scratch's mega subwoofers, I think it's safe to say that I am unsure if virtual technology exists within FiM's time, so better safe than sorry and place Equestrian Earth 10 years into the future. The whole story is an Alternative Universe anyway so it won't change the tags that much.
