Finally drew my ponysona! (or is it OC? Doesn't matter) · 11:19pm Jul 23rd, 2015
Well, I finally drew, and colored my OC! This is something I've been intending to do for a while now and just kept pushing it off. Well, today I found myself with some time to spare while I took a break from other projects and got to work.
A little history/background on Sharp Shot:
I'm sure many of you have at least had the thought of, "What would be the pony version of my in Equestria?" at some point. How far you pursued this and gave it some serious thought is likely varied, but I digress. Now, not to be as unoriginal as everybody else that chooses to slap a red mane on their OC because "Oh, red is edgy and makes my character a badass automatically." I actually have I good excuse/reason. I'm a redhead and therefore, dammit, so is the ponification of myself! Past that, red manes are a pain to work out a color scheme for and I like challenges. Although I think I subconsciously channeled a bit of Sunset Shimmer in there. *Goes and compares pictures next to each other and comes back.* Okay....maybe a little more that a bit. Moving on!
Now, onto his cutie mark, a crosshair. This stems from my natural talents. I'm a great shot and have been since I picked up a gun as a kid and few things give me greater satisfaction than hitting a target dead center and doing it quickly. In the world of ponies though, the problem exists that guns and possibly even bows, don't exist in Equestria. Projectile warfare and fighting is performed sole by the master race unicorns. For the sake of arguing though, let's say Sharp Shot there got a hold of one, the next issue becomes shooting it. The obvious solution to that problem, well, make him a unicorn! Well, I wanted to him to be unique, and nearly everybody has a unicorn OC or at least a pegasus one, leaving the earth ponies, I feel, under represented. Not that I blame people. Between magic and flying, it's harder to go, eh, I'll choose the hornless and wingless pony. It makes things difficult as you literally have nothing but your own appendages and strength to rely on for interaction with the environment, which so happens is now limited to just the ground. (Good luck getting things off the top shelf now.)
This gave me a thought though. What if Sharp Shot was an Earth pony? An Earth pony with a special talent that specifically requires fine motor skills and most notably fingers? And so it decided that Sharp Shot would face an existential crisis every day of his life with a talent he can't fully utilize. (Unless I just become a lazy writer and say "because earth pony magic. Deal with it" ) Stemming from this crisis though, he has developed an anger issue to go with an equally sized ego earning him the nickname, "Hot Shot". Maybe. The jury is still out on that, but it's an idea nonetheless. All in all I found the situation, a bit cruel and with opportunity to be kind of funny, kind of like life itself. Did I just get deep? Nah.
Anyway, in the near (maybe semi distant future) he should start making an appearance in my stories or start starring in his own.
Like the OC but when I read the name all I could think about was the Sharp Shot from the Soldier's Memoirs Saga by Dusk Quill. Oh well still good.
I haven't read that. Is it any good, because I'll put it on my reading list if it is.
Also thanks! I'm thinking about actually drawing the art covers for all my stories from now on, although, I'm not sure if I'll color of of them. I can do a black and white sketch fairly quickly, but coloration on a computer takes me forever. (Mostly due to cleaning up the image.)
