Okay.... as many of you may know, my close friends on this site included, I am a Venom fan.
OH SCREW YOU CELL! Anyways... I just recently got a full on novel called the Vengeance of Venom. A collection of stories featuring Venom and Spider-Man's more popular fights from back in the days of Eddie Brock and includes the first encounter with Carnage. Anyways one story always stuck out to me.... the Trial of Venom. The story starts off with a quick tour of the Vault, which to all you uneducated comic book nerds is Marvel's Arkham... except it works, and we pass by a few villains when some guards and a Ms. Brewster hear a scream. They run over to Eddie's cell to find that.... the symbiote.... died..... well that's a little weird to call this the Trial of Venom since the suit just died and it'll NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER COME BACK. Anyways Eddie then asks for a plea of not guilty by way of Matt Murdock. Oh yeah sure like Daredevil would take your case..... wait.... oh.... he does.... and he's telling the truth about not being in control of his actions. Huh.... well that should be enough for Spidey to rela-
So Eddie is brought to trial and Spidey is called as a witness. Matt asks him some questions and brings up key events from their previous fights such as why he's after him and how serious he was about Venom trying to kill him. Eventually it gets to the point Eddie asks Spider-Man a question.... can he forgive him..... sadly this only extends to about one more scene where Eddie's trying to explain that if he gets a Not-Guilty then he'd move FAR FAR AWAY FROM NEW-YORK. Spidey decides to say he trusts him.... then asks Ms. Brewster for a favor as Eddie gets.... not guilty by plea of insanity that's long since passed.
Eddie and Matt talk a bit and it seems like Eddie is allowed to leave.... but nope. Spidey snags him by his shoes and starts insulting him. It turns out this is a ploy to get the suit to reveal itself and..... wait.... holy shit that's a good yet disgusting hiding spot.... THE SYMBIOTE COMES OUT FROM EDDIE'S MOUTH. It was hiding INSIDE HIM controlling his heart beat to full all the lie detectors... EVEN DAREDEVIL'S. Anyways. A fight happens and Venom's locked up. Now while the fight scenes are cool and all, both Daredevil and Spidey fight Venom, what urks me is this.... SPIDEY WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO FINALLY BE FREE OF EDDIE. The symbiote and Eddie were finally going to be out of his hair for good. No more trouble from the Poisonous Duo.... and yet he couldn't do it... he LITERALLY tried to keep Eddie from leaving New York because he was being the asshole in this case and before all of you people start yelling at me I want this to be clear. I would NOT have this much of an issue if it was Doc Ock or Green Goblin. Why? Well it's simple.Doctor Octopus has a superiority complex and would like to boast about his achievements and this would be the big one for him. Green Goblin..... really just saying the NAME should give you an indicator why Spidey wouldn't trust him. But Venom has shown he would save civilians at the cost of losing Spider-Man.
This should've been Spidey's GREATEST triumph. That he's finally FREE of Eddie Brock and by extension the symbiote, though he didn't know that at the time, and finally be able to move on..... so why didn't he? It's simple... by this point he's more scared of Brock then anything. Even if Eddie had truly lost the suit he'd try and do this to Brock because he wouldn't accept that Brock would be able to move on. So what does this say? That the Venom suit is a slowly evolving devious mastermind... or does it say that Peter is scared that he can't truly be free because he never really beat Venom on his own.... either way Spidey easily made the biggest mistake of his life and doesn't seem to regret it.

Okay, but Venom is constantly being driven insane by it's hosts, so even if it isn't inherently evil, it's still dangerous. I'd say this is less Spidey being afraid for himself and more Spidey being cautious. If he let Venom go, without being completely sure Eddy had himself under control, he'd have to take responsibility for the damage because he could have stopped it.

3233780 But Spidey isn't a mind reader. He can only work off what he knows. Venom hasn't made itself very trustworthy over the years, so honestly we really shouldn't expect Spidey to trust it or Eddie. Any misfortune Venom got, it brought on itself. It's not really so much about whats fair as it is about reaping what you sow.

3236992 Now all that being said, I refuse to believe that Flash Thompson (who I think is Venom now, haven't read any new comics lately so I don't know for sure) is better at controlling the symbiote than those that wore it before. I think Venom as a symbiote is in a healthier state of mind and if it met Spidey now it would have more control. Either that or the new writers would have no regard for character development, as most of them demonstrate these days, and we get the Venom we'd rather move away from. Cause watching characters go in circles for years is stupid. Sorry that got bit ranty.
