HiE - hypothetical discussion · 8:35pm May 29th, 2015
Don't worry folks, I'm still working on the story. I simply want to discuss something.
Let's say that for the sake of discussion, I've got this idea for a chapter that would be the written equivalent of "HiE - The Movie". Overall it wouldn't be that hard to pull off. But what if I want the overall feel to be similar to that of an 80s movie to pay tribute to the origin of the source material? Is there a way to actually go about doing that in written form, while still staying true to the story structure I've crafted?
I would have no idea how to pull that off.
I'll just be ready with a can of gass and a few matches... and a shotgun, in case it doesn't work.
Depends on the source material's genre. It would essentially require some minor alterations to the characters personalities and behaviors to match that of what you want or to at least make it flow.
I'm not entirely sure about that scenario, but as long as you find a way of making it work, I have no qualms.
I dunno. Maybe listen to a lot of Steel Panther and Santa Cruz? You know, other modern-retro things.

Well everyone a few ideas came to me after remembering some details about other 80s cartoon movies based on ongoing series. From what I can recall, and what I saw when I looked it up, they involve a storyline that doesn't appear to be set in the series canon at any easy to identify point, because what they portray is inconsistent with the storyline. There's a ton of new characters who were never officially introduced, and are treated like they were always present. If there's a villain, it's someone who's never been heard of before in the series, but someone has enough knowledge about the villain to deliver exposition. The plot seems to be loosely interconnected scenes showing the actions of various characters. There's kickass music, some scenes of action, two or more groups reuniting near the end just before the resolution, and the villain that was introduced can only be defeated by some macguffin created for the movie, and never alluded to before.
All that in mind, I could probably come up with something. It would have all of the aspects for 80s stuff, but making it feel like the 80s would be the hard part.

You could always compare the modern Tirek episodes with the original movie and pull an Aku. Throw his enemies into the future where his rule is law.
You know what keeps the tone it had in the '80s really well? Mad Max Fury Road. The most badass movie of the decade

3108733 Not a lot of 80's cartoons for me to reference on as the good ones came out in the 90's, as wells the majority that i have actually seen. With such a standard for writing as you have mentioned, the story might as well be a side-story or its own short story depending on how you want to make it. It will still be hard to pull it off as you will essentially try to convert a modern work to an 80's style story. Good luck.
