Musical Nostalgia · 6:38am Mar 18th, 2015
So, Asilin and I wound up talking about bands for a while during our drive home from a trip to see her family, and I found myself trying to find a way to describe a certain group of albums and musicians that I liked in my youth. "Youth" in this case being about 16-18, once we started looking up when various albums came out.
Anyway, I thought I'd share my list, and ask other people — what was your scene when you first got into music?
Basically, think about when you first started really paying attention to music, and started seeking out particular artists or styles instead of just going with what was on the radio or whatever. What hits the nostalgia button for you, if that was a while ago, or what do you just still think of as favorites from a few years ago?
Here's mine.
I'd throw in more (Korn - Freak on a Leash, Powerman 5000 - When Worlds Collide, Rage Against The Machine - Sleep Now in the Fire, etc), but eventually there are just too many youtube links. I linked music videos not just because it's become a popular way to share music (does that ever strike anyone else as weird sometimes? that we're replacing radio with a streaming video service?), but also because that's how I first found most of this stuff (I mostly got into metal through friends a couple years later). You might recognize why if you're about my age. These were getting a lot of play on MTV back around 1999-2000 (there's another one - Gorillaz).
So, how about you guys?
I'll give you props. Blink and Offspring were two of my first favourite bands. I really loved the lyrical style and music.
However, these are also some of the first bands I got into:
I heard PM5K on the radio recently, for the first time in years and I got super-nostalgic. ;_; Orgy does the same thing for me.
I actually didn't get my love of music from the radio, from any of the "popular" songs (you know the ones), or any sort of band. I really didn't give music much of a chance until I was screwing around on YouTube and somehow found myself clicking on a song called Clearing the Skies by a lesser-known guy called RealFaction. The tune was just so catchy that I ended up looking around at some other independent artists and their work. My interest in music slowly grew from there to expand to different genres, but I've always found that I enjoy the work of independent artists the best, usually because they (usually) create music out of a love for the art instead of out of necessity for a paycheck.
While it's been years, I still have Clearing the Skies as the first song on my workout playlist. It still sounds just as good as it did years ago. Is it anything particularly great? No, not really, but it still holds a special place in my music library all the same.
