Well, kinda boring title, but at least it's all-encompassing, right?
Better suggestions welcome, of course.
What's up today? Just a few short ones again. I'm going to try and keep this up at least until my read later list is depleted. Shouldn't take longer than until the end of March, Celestia-willing. So, grab some bite-sized morsels below, including a few that I really took too long to get to.
Story: The Cake of Apontyllado
Author: PresentPerfect
Synopsis:
Pinkie told Rainbow Dash there was a surprise in the basement. It's a cake, hidden where nopony else will find it. Or her.
Current Length: 2,932 words (one-shot)
Status: Complete
Review: This is a parody of Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, The Cask of Amontillado, but with a comedic twist. Any familiar with that story should find some measure of enjoyment from this, but even if you aren’t, it’s a fun, short ride. The voice is extremely weird coming from Pinkie, though. It’s clearly meant to pay homage to the olden style of writing it was inspired by, but I just can’t imagine Pinkie narrating like that. Oh, wait, that’s totally lampshaded. Never mind; consider me amused. The passage with all the warning signs got a good series of chuckles out of me, as did Rainbow’s completely blasé attitude to everything happening. That ending, though… Heh. It’s not a fantastic story, but it’s well-written enough, and you should get at least a few chuckles from it. By author admission, it was a quick fic for the More Most Dangerous Game Contest a little while back, with the intention of being good for some laughs. And those, you should have. Not bad for just under 3k words.
Story: Connections
Author: Agent Bookfort
Synopsis:
Twilight's time in Canterlot tends to keep her away from her Ponyville friends for far longer than she would like, so she decides to invite them the the castle for a get-together.
Princess Celestia and Princess Luna love Twilight with all their hearts, but for some reason Princess Luna has misgivings about this event.
Sometimes, the connection to a friend extends far further than you want to believe.
Current Length: 3,182 words (one-shot)
Status: Complete
Review: This is a pretty overdone concept: the one about Twilight being immortal and dealing with the loss of her friends. It’s written decently, but I really do feel like I’ve read this story a few times before. It doesn’t seem to bring much to the table in terms of being different from the others. Celestia seems a little off (at least at first, until her character strengthens toward the end), but that allows Luna to shine, so try not to let it bother you too much. It has a few okay a lot of silly grammar derps, most obvious where dialogue punctuation is concerned (tut tut). Still, if you’re not one to let things like that bother you, or you just like reading Immortal!Twilight fics, you might like this one. I gave it a thumb, at least. Perhaps I’ll like a different Bookfort story more (any suggestions?)?
Story: Eternity
Author: RainbowBob
Synopsis:
Sometimes growing up means more than just time passing. For some, it means letting go of what they hold dear and moving onto greener pastures. And for others, it means becoming what they never wanted to be in the first place.
Current Length: 2,950 words (one-shot)
Status: Complete
Review:
Discord stared into the abyss. It stared back. Eventually, Discord blinked.
“Haha, told you I’d win,” the abyss said. “Why did you even bother trying to beat me at a blinking contest?”
Aaaand I’m sold. This is very distinctly a RainbowBob fic, and by that I mean his particular language usage and structure. Discord has been summoned by his parents(!), and this is a pretty big deal, considering the fact his mother is a galaxy, his father is a black hole, and his uncle is just literally space. I mean, this might just be the largest-scoped story I’ve ever read, and yet it’s contained to within 3k words? What sorcery is at work here? The idea that Discord might destroy Equestria, its systems, and the universe as a whole (and apparently should have done so already, long ago) is rather… wow. As expected, it’s been given a thorough editing job by people who know what they’re doing, so it reads great. If I have one complaint, it’s that Discord really doesn’t feel himself; he’s rather angsty, actually, all things considered. Still, for a read unlike any other, it’s worth a look if you feel like a small story with a unique twist and a diamond density, that plays out without too much comedy to ruin the seriousness yet still remains fun. Just be prepared to cradle your mind for a moment, as you might stop-start a few times from sheer wat. The end is rather nice, too.
That does it for today. I need to start editing the next Sunset of Time before Albinocorn gets all up in my grill for neglecting him.

I really liked Apontyalldo, though I feel that if it were written to be as dark as the original, it would provide a whole new level of horror. To me, Pinkie can truly be the perfect dark character in certain situations, and in a parody of anything Edgar Allen Poe, she would do a good job. Of course, as it was explained, the function of that story was not to create horror but to create laughs. It's a comedic parody, and so the idea of a dark, pony version of Cask of Amontillado is just sitting there for anyone to take.
Hrm, you could say these reviews are...
Cerulean's voice on the matter.
That was terrible and I don't feel terrible :B
