Things I Like, Pt. IV (even if they make me sad) · 6:27pm Mar 5th, 2015
Spontaneous moments of humanity.
As previously mentioned, Leonard Nimoy died. Star Trek Online players, on hearing the news, gathered on Vulcan around a fountain there to stand vigil. To my knowledge this was not organized by anyone - it was just something that we all decided to do. With the latest patch to the game - less than a week after Nimoy's passing - the game devs have modified the fountain somewhat, as you can see above. And, dozens of people are still gathering there to mourn Nimoy's passing (there's more there than there seems to be - multiple instances of Vulcan have been created to house people).
In addition, Earth Spacedock, New Romulus, and Q'o'noS have all had memorial plaques added in memoriam. They sort of break game immersion, but I don't think anyone minds.
The plaques are permanent, but the three locations mentioned above also have black flags flying in memoriam for the moment.
That's touching. Good to see this nice display from devs and gamers alike.
I was rather happy to see them do this. Granted it becomes a bit more jarring when you realize that his voice is heard every time you enter a new zone in game for the first time.
It's always nice to see that people do not, in fact, suck sometimes.
