So, Crime and Funishment Got Leaked · 6:02pm Feb 15th, 2015
Weird word to use in this context. "Leaked". Hm. Yet, it's exactly what happened -- there was a draft of the story saved in this page (for formatting and word-count issues, more than anything) that I never submitted, and I didn't provide the link to anyone.
It was password-protected, obviusly, and yet right now someone commented on it, saying that it was visible. And apparently, one could even download it completely. Not sure how to feel at the moment.
So yeah. Seeing how this is just a silly fic, and not some kind of secret file that describes how I was the mastermind behind the most recent Fimfic drama (pick whichever you want, I guess -- I heard that PresentPerfect was revealed to be actually thirteen midgets and one really tall woman sharing an account pretty recently, maybe that will work) it's not that big of a deal, but it still annoyed me.
Sssssssso. If you have seen that thing, how did you do that? You can't share it anymore (who would do that, anyway? It's just a fic), but just in case: don't share the downloaded file. Also, have in mind that it was a draft, with no input from prereaders, proofreaders, or anything. The actual, official chapters will differ in many points.
But nah that'd be a dick move, and I'm fairly sure you're all pretty cool guys. Just saying. Also, I guess this means I was dumb for saving ubsubmitted stories? I have no idea. Just in case, don't do that , guys. Or do it, but, like, in a smarter way I guess.
EDIT: Kay, details of the leak deleted, just in case. I know how it happened, and I'll contact a mod or some shit.
Oh shit you actually linked my account
Please, people, do not try to blackmail me or buy me into sending it to you. I won't. Would it be a "real" book, maybe I would, but this is not the case, the book is already free for everyone, and the least I can do is waiting for aragon to release it when he wants to.
Also, I like it a lot, even if it's sometimes very dumb or nonsensical, It's the funniest thing I've read for a while, so, yeah...
And this is why security through obscurity does not work.
It sounds like Knighty didn't actually protect the files at all, just made it so that you need a password to get a working link to the file. But google can totally find that! Considering that this is fanfiction, and doesn't really need very good security, he could just keep doing what he's doing but add a marker to tell search engines to ignore it. (there is one, but I don't know how to use it)
2799048 Hey, I'll buy the story off of you!
2799048
I realized I had linked the account, and then I had a moment of "Wait. Wait, I think I might be stupid", then deleted the link. And then you said you were the leaked one.
Damn we're bad at security, dude.
2799094 No wonder why you said you associate with Money Bags.
I'll be waiting for your next post, where you explain that Pinkie Pie herself stole the unfinished story to submit and share it with the world in an elaborate plot to defame you.
Some walls were made to be broken, n'est-ce pas ?
Oh god this makes so much sense.
2799094 Oh. Didn't see the edit. I hesitated to ask you to remove it, but then I thought "Hey, this might be the occasion to legally give unknown people harsh and stingy rebuttals over the internet, and hell he already posted it, whatever."
Indeed we're bad. I'm bad. You know I'm bad. [trots away (badly) singing michael jackson]
2799083 No. At least have the decency to give me a price, so I can correctly take out my self-loathing about my righteousness on your evil opportunism.
The almighty Google sees all, knows all!
2799120 Your username and comment go frightfully well with my fears for the future.
I actually think they already have won the war on information and are just the will to do it away from being the evil overlords some seem to think they are (or joke about), and an AI away from some sort or the other of world domination. I hope I'm just paranoid.

Eh, until Google, Amazon, and Facebook combine their databases we'll be fine.
Wierd. The Google spider shouldn't be able to index the chapter unless there is some public chain of links it can follow (public as in in the source of a non-secured page, not necessarily publicly visible to a typical end user). I'd definitely pass this on to Knighty, something about his site design isn't working correctly.
Hm... that's rather interesting. Trying it now I only see two results. One to, I would suppose, the published version, and another to a deleted story.
Edit: Well, it seems my unfinished fic is safe somehow.

With the import form gdocs I find no reason to have un posted chapters or stories And my eeditor can still access them fine. In fact gdocs is a lot better for editing anyways imo.

It is, but I like to see the exact wordcount of what I write (and fimfiction and GDocs count them differently), and Crime and Funishment is very format-heave. A lot of italics, a lot of horizontal breaks, some fun with font sizes... I wanted to make sure it looked pleasant to the eye and avoid unnecesary (a.k.a. distracting) gimmicks.
As I personally don't use the GDocs import feature, choosing to copy and paste instead, having backups for my unpublished stories was kind of a must. Guess I will change that now.
2799114
I can't
argn pls
2799132 They don't need to, the NSA already did it for them.
2800187
Nah, the four of them are the major players in the big data market. NSA is just another competitor.
2799868
PEOPLE DESERVE TO KNOW, PP.
YOU OWE THEM.
2800710 2800187 Something notable is that Google is already heavily connected to Amazon and Facebook, mainly though ads. This I find even now, because Amazon is able to take your browsing history of what you look at – bikes, watches, headphones – and send that to Google. Soon, ads on FIMFiction or Facebook, both set by Google, begin to display ads about said browsing history from Amazon.
There could be other ways the three are connected, but that's one way.
2800710 Yeah, but all of those guys are legally required to give access to their databases if the NSA asks for it. At least that's what was like before Snowden ratted them out.
2799114 oh no we're not falling for that one again
