    A New Story Appears

I finally got around to posting something new. It only took me, what, three years? Why zombies, though? is a quick one-shot focusing on Sunset Shimmer shortly after EQG 1.

    Cervine Wings on Haitus

I figured this deserved a blog post, and I might as well confirm that I'm not exactly dead.

I'm just very, very slow sometimes.

Random World Building Ideas - Part 1: Bloodlines

I've been working through a lot of concepts for the Atramentverse, and I figured I'd present some of them in blog posts for others to examine and provide feedback on, if they so desire. As always, feel free to use any of the concepts here in your own works if you want. Also, a warning: the following is full of severe author

Have a skeleton of a story!

Some few of you may remember that I had written a story in 2012 called "Sometimes you just need somepony to talk to" - Since renamed to "A Shy Shrink" - featuring Fluttershy as an ad hoc therapist for characters from my first attempt at creative writing, "Ursae Majoris". Only the first chapter was ever published, but several more were already written. I recently unpublished the first chapter with

    Equestrian Timekeeping

edit: 11/18/15 - adding a few extra notes, mostly for my future reference.

Over the years I've seen some speculation and theories about the calendar Equestria uses, like how many days are in a year/month/week, what they would call them, etc. etc. etc.

Random World Building Ideas - Part 1: Bloodlines · 8:58pm Feb 1st, 2015

I've been working through a lot of concepts for the Atramentverse, and I figured I'd present some of them in blog posts for others to examine and provide feedback on, if they so desire. As always, feel free to use any of the concepts here in your own works if you want. Also, a warning: the following is full of severe author head-canon, proceed at your own discretion.

For this post I'll be discussing what I call Bloodlines. Basically, I've divided the major races in the world of FIM into three bloodlines, or categories: Fey, Infernal, and Draconic (Why yes, I did draw a little inspiration from D&D and such.) The major difference between the bloodlines as a whole is the nature of their magic, otherwise you'll find individual species that are very similar in some ways across categories.

Fey - The Otherworld
The Fey races tend to be secretive and reclusive, and will often seem ephemeral to outsiders. Their civilizations and traditions are some of the longest lasting on the planet, however. Lifespans vary between races, ranging from a few dozen years to a few centuries, with rare exceptions. Fey societies are often difficult to locate, often hiding behind magical wards or strange dimensional topography. Fey races do not hybridize easily with other species. The Marian bloodline is an offshoot of the Fey bloodline that contain most sentient aquatic creatures.

Fey magic is difficult to understand, even for other fey. It tends to be very intuitive and self-directed for the caster, and most races have innate talent with certain kinds of spells, but difficulty with anything else due to lack of formal training. Fey typically do not generate enough natural energy to provide very much power for their magic, instead relying on external sources, either drawing from them at the time of casting or feeding on them to build up their own reserves. Thus, they tend to favor subtle spells in most situations, in order to avoid running themselves dry.

The Fey bloodline includes:
Changelings
Windigos
Deer/Perytons
Sirens (Marian)
Breezies
Draconequus (Draconic?)
Manticores

Infernal - From Beneath the Earth
The Infernal races tend to be what we would consider the more mundane races. Humans would be considered part of this bloodline. There's not much to expand on here that would just be confirming the fairly obvious. Infernal creatures tend to hybridize very easily with other infernals.

Infernal magic is fairly straightforward, following certain rules and conditions and available to anyone with sufficient knowledge and tools. Infernal creatures can easily make use of their own reservoirs of energy to cast spells, only needing external supplements for very intensive or complex spells (or if they are a novice needing that extra push).

The Infernal bloodline includes:
Ponies
Hippocamps (Marian)
Horses
Alikeros (Draconic?)
Donkeys
Zebra
Buffalo
Griffons
Hippogriffs
Minotaurs
most non-Draconic Chimeras

Draconic - The Elemental Masters
Draconic races are powerful, long-lived, and usually quite solitary. Dragons are the main race laying claim to the bloodline, but there may be other species extinct or hidden that are forgotten to time. Draconic races hybridize very easily with almost any other species, and these diluted breeds are considered full members of the bloodline, though they may sometimes be looked down upon by full-blooded dragons.

Draconic magic tends to be subconscious, acting very often to enhance the creatures attributes or provide some metaphysical advantages. For example, the unnatural protectiveness of a dragon's scales, or the ability to breath fire. As a result, they are usually very resistant to both enchantment and the dispelling of enchantments. They create their own internal magical energy like infernal races, but for dragons and their kind this generation is usually influence by certain environmental factors (for example, a dragon growing more powerful based on its hoard). Draconic bloods that take the time to study magic formally often make very powerful mages, as their internal energy is powerful enough to allow them to cast even intensive or complex spells without very much external aid.

The Draconic bloodline includes:
Dragons
Half-dragons
Hydras
Naga
Kobolds

One thing to keep in mind, however: these bloodlines are artificial categories imposed on the various species by the civilizations in power many thousands of years before the events of the show. The Infernal and Fey bloodlines especially were strongly defined by who fell on which side of the battle lines during the many wars between the two groups, rather than any kind of common ancestry (For instance, the two Marian races above belong to two different bloodlines).

At the same time, the conflicts were not based on nothing, and their differing approaches and cultural attitudes toward magic may have been the catalyst for this segregation in the first place. Either way, the descriptions above are mostly broad stereotypes, and it is not impossible to find a species that does not conform to the rules laid out above yet is still considered part of one group or another.
