This is a bit of a long one. Backstory mostly for Nightmare Moon.
I'm an old-school MLP fan, glad the new show is doing great.

Ok, so, short version.
The moon kingdom and Equestria were connected thanks to the power of the Guinzisho and the Elements of Harmony (They have similar powers due to coming from the same source, the tree of harmony) Thanks to this bond, there is a portal between the two worlds that stay open as long as the two gems are active. This also led to unity of the two kingdoms, trade and the like. Celestia and Luna, when they were fillies, would go and visit the Silver Millienum and vice versa. Princess Serenity quickly became friends with Luna, constantly running off with her to go and play or hiding from the other senshi and her older sister.
Over time, the mare and the filly stayed close friends. But, as with all things, time slowly began to work its way to drit them apart. The battle with Discord and Luna's adventure with the senshi to defeat Nehlina (Who I love in the magna more than in the anime) started to seperate the two. However, through it all, they tried to remain close friends. Luna was especially happy to learn of Serenity's romance with the Prince of Earth. This was especially handy since Serenity seemed to be the only one, besides Celestia, to care and love her night. The last time that Luna talked to the princess, Serenity made a promise that she would always be there for her. I don't think I need to say what broke that vow.
Luna, did not take the news well. Serenity was one of the last things that kept her from giving into the nightmare forces and the promise of power. Feeling like there was no one left to love her night, she finally lost it and well...
And now I got to go back and continue Harmony of the moon...
